The Story Behind the World Islands, Dubai
Since its inception in the early 2000s, the World Islands, Dubai has been the subject of considerable conjecture and speculation has been rife. There has been a lot of drama in the development’s history, from suspected celebrity acquisitions to crazy hotel concepts that were eventually abandoned. What was once one of the most ambitious projects in the United Arab Emirates has now been reduced to the appearance of a sandy ghost town, serving as a symbol of the global financial crisis that had such a significant impact on Dubai in the late 2000s.

What are the World Islands, Dubai?
The Globe Islands, located around 2.5 miles off the coast of Dubai in the Persian Gulf, are a group of tiny islands that have been constructed to reproduce the world in miniature, with each island named after a different nation. When the World Islands were first revealed in 2003, they were hailed as the next great thing in the world of luxury travel, with members of the global elite, including Richard Branson and the late Karl Lagerfeld, wanting to have a piece of the action. The World Islands, as is customary in the glittering city of Dubai, are not a naturally occurring phenomenon; rather, they are the creation of Nakheel Projects, a Dubai-based development company that is known for a number of high-profile projects across the region, including the St.
- The artificial islands were constructed by dredging sand from the Gulf of Mexico and transferring it to the intended location, with several millions of tons of boulders being used to hold it in place during construction.
- The complete collection spans a distance of around 5.4 kilometers.
- At this point, it was projected that about $15 billion had already been spent, but only one island development had been completed, with the remaining projects in various states of completion or construction.
- Also available for exclusive hire is Lebanon Island, which can be used for corporate events such as wedding ceremonies or private gatherings.
World Islands’ current developments
Although there have been several stories of the project restarting after it was put on hold in 2008, none have been more convincing than the current Heart of Europe project, which is now ongoing. The Heart of Europe concept, as imagined by the Kleindienst Group, would see a limited number of islands in the world turned into replicas of the continent of Europe – to the point where synthetic meteorological conditions such as rain and snow have been manufactured in certain regions. Kleindienst was one of the original island owners, having purchased Austria at the height of the project’s popularity.
While other investors, sensibly, fled the ship when the going got tough, the group stayed on to its purchase – albeit it has taken over two decades for it to finally get close to being finished.
The Heart of Europe project will be completed by the end of 2018. While much of the mammoth project is still in the early stages of building, it is anticipated that the hotels will begin to welcome visitors as early as this year, if not sooner.
Visiting the World Islands, Dubai
Despite the fact that the Heart of Europe project has not yet been finished in its entirety, visitors may still visit Lebanon Island, which was the only island to be built when construction on the project was temporarily halted in 2008. The island of Lebanon is accessible by ferry from Dubai and has a beach club, restaurant, and beaches for guests to enjoy during their stay in the city. The island may also be rented exclusively for business parties, weddings, and other private gatherings of up to 100 people.
Additionally, boat cruises of the desolate islands are available, with private boats available for rent.
Are any of the islands for sale?
The development and purchase opportunities at the World Islands are, for the most part, a closely guarded secret. However, at the time of publication, there is only one individual island for sale on Private Islands Inc, a listing that dates back to when the World Islands were just a fascinating concept. Although it is not specified which island it is, the advertisement touts it as being 505,925 sq ft and undeveloped, with an asking price of $16 million for the undeveloped portion. This may seem excessive given the baggage connected with the World Islands project; nevertheless, if the Heart of Europe project lives up to its high promises, the island’s worth might rapidly soar.
Investors will be able to choose between purchasing a second home on one of the resort islands, which will include luxury villas and mansions, or a highly exclusive selection of completely private islands, which will all have access to the extensive amenities of the European-inspired hotels right outside their door.

- For urban development, master planning, and architecture to be successful, they must be based on an understanding of the surrounding environment, an understanding of the many functions, a consideration of the users, and an understanding of the financial feasibility of intervention.
- We concentrate on the most important elements of a space or structure, resulting in a design that has its own traits and a distinct personality.
- It is critical to minimize the environmental impacts associated with the design, construction, and occupancy of the island in order to protect the island’s unique natural marine environment and to ensure that its occupants will enjoy the island’s pleasant environment.
- As a result, we concentrated our efforts on the quality of the surrounding seas, marine habitats, noise, air, and human surroundings during the Environmental Impact Assessment.
- Careful planning and incorporation of the necessary utilities into the overall development from the beginning will provide a significant cost and time savings in the long run.
- The isolated developments throughout the world necessitate the installation of a full self-supporting system, which includes power, cooling, water, waste water, gas, communications, and fire protection.
We employ an integrated sustainable design approach that allows us to locate utilities as close to the structure or the subsurface as possible in order to ensure that all required utilities are available and supplied in an unobtrusive, sustainable, and, above all, aesthetically pleasing manner that meets the expectations of architects and clients.

Work restarts on Dubai’s fake ‘World Islands’ – 15 years after they launched
DUBAI appears to be the type of place where anything could happen at any time. With the announcement of the project in 2003, building on floating islands in the shape of a globe map got underway – but the project came to a grinding halt following the global financial crisis of 2008. 7 One of the magnificent islands where you will be able to stay is depicted in this artist’s impression.Credit: The Heart of Europe However, 10 years after the initial construction phase was completed, the islands are once again completely developed.
- The sand that was dredged from the Gulf of Mexico was used to construct the 300 man-made islands.
- 7 The world is made up of 300 separate islands, each of which is now undergoing development.
- As part of a development known as the Heart of Europe, it is expected to bring “the tranquillity and culture of Venice to the peaceful shores of Dubai,” according to the developer.
- Sweden, on the other hand, is today little more than a half-finished palace.
- 7 In 2008, the financial crisis prompted a significant slowdown in development on the islands, which has since been restoredCredit: Instagram 7There is still a long way to go with the construction, and the islands are mostly still in the planning stages.
- It is believed that $14 billion (£9.9 billion) has already been spent on the project, which began in 2003 but was halted when Dubai was severely damaged by the financial crisis in 2008.
- According to the developer, 70 percent of the islands had been sold — but the sales came to a grinding halt, and the resort that was to be built was reduced to a ghost town.
Seventh, Lebanon was the only island that had been completely created when the rest of the project came to a grinding end.
“Lebanon Island” is now on the market for Dhs80 million (£15.5 million), which is a substantial sum in the UAE.
There are also two distinct beaches as well as a licensed bar on the property.

Since the beginning of the building of the man-made islands of Dubai, which have grown to become the world’s biggest artificial archipelago, it has been twenty years. Although it was widely publicized as the crowning achievement of the United Emirate’s urban development, the tale that unfolded two decades later was quite different from what the creators had envisioned. Islands that have not been built, abandoned projects, and the water regaining its place are all examples of this.
The current state of the islands
A flurry of urban construction erupted in Dubai at the start of the twenty-first century, establishing the Arab Emirate as the capital of oddities and architectural landmarks. Building the Palm Islands, which were subsequently joined by the archipelagos of The World and The Universe, which are still under development, was the most ambitious undertaking undertaken at the time. There are a total of five man-made archipelagos that have been recovered from the sea and are being marketed as a luxury refuge of sorts.
- The Palm Islands are a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira are the three palms that make up this structure. This has resulted in an expansion of 320 kilometers in the length of Dubai’s beach area, which now measures 5.6 kilometers, 8.4 kilometers, and 46 kilometers. When the first visitors arrived in December 2020, Deira was the most developed of the three, with Jebel Ali still under construction and Jumeirah being the least developed. The entire world. There are 300 islands in this group that form the map of the world. Its 9.34 km² have contributed 232 kilometers of shoreline. Despite the fact that the project was started 17 years ago, it has not yet been completed, and it is the one that has encountered the most difficulties

Over the course of twenty years, a variety of issues have arisen, resulting in construction delays, nonpayment of bills, debts, legal issues, irreversible environmental damage, and the sinking of certain islands back into the sea. Despite all of these unanticipated events that have raised questions about the project’s viability, the developer, Nakheel, isn’t giving up hope.
First problem: oil and financial crisis
Initially, the financial and real estate crisis of 2008, followed by the collapse in oil prices in 2014, which fuelled the Emirate’s economy, had a detrimental influence on the feasibility of this macro-project. The timeline of events is lengthy and complicated, but it may be described as follows: private investors who backed out, million-dollar debts accumulated by the developer, litigation, and construction activity that has been paused with no set timetable for resumption. The difficulties continue to exist now.
Property values in the United Kingdom have fallen by 15% since the end of 2014.
The World: at risk of sinking
Continuing with The World, the maritime business Penguin Marine issued a warning in 2010 that this collection of archipelagos was on the verge of sinking back into the sea. The company, which was in charge of providing logistics and transportation services to the islands, took measurements on a regular basis for the purpose of safety. The primary reason for this is that the sand that had been removed from the seabed to construct the 300 archipelagos was gradually returning to its original location.
Also as a result of this, passage between the islands’ waterways became difficult.
It was also sinking at a pace of five millimeters every year, according to NASA data, according to the Palm Jumeirah.
Premature erosion of the construction materials
The World is still with us, and in 2010, the marine business Penguin Marine issued a warning that this collection of archipelagos was on its way back into the sea, which was confirmed in 2011. It was the company’s responsibility to take frequent safety measurements on the islands because it was in charge of providing logistics and transportation services. This was primarily due to the fact that the sand that had been extracted from the seabed to construct the 300 archipelagos was slowly returning to its original location.
This also resulted in the obstruction of the canals that connect the islands.
Palm Jumeirah was also sinking at a rate of five millimeters per year, according to information from the NASA.
Rising sea levels
This is a problem that does not only affect Dubai. It was predicted in 2017 by the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency (ADEA) that sea levels will rise by 9 meters in the worst-case scenario due to the impacts of climate change, which would be devastating for Dubai and its man-made islands. A total of around 85 percent of the population of the United Arab Emirates lives in coastal areas. The islands are surrounded by a massive wave breaker, which serves to protect them from the elements. Due to its low elevation of only 2 meters above sea level, it provides residents and visitors with uninterrupted views.
Long term, this barrier is unlikely to be sufficient even in the worst-case scenario, let alone in the most optimistic scenario.
It is not clear whether the increased rate of construction that occurred in Dubai during the first decade of the twenty-first century, as well as the pollution associated with this activity, contributed to the warming of the city or of the Persian Gulf.

Dubai’s wildly ambitious ‘The World’ islands could finally be coming to life
Six islands in Dubai’s man-made archipelago “The World,” which would be built out in the pattern of the Earth’s continents, have been proposed as a way to revive the project, which has been dormant for over a decade since the financial crisis of 2008 brought it to a grinding halt. As part of “The Heart of Europe,” an ambitious complex is being built that will include dozens of luxury resorts and extravagant restaurants that will be encircled by floating residences that are half-submerged and half-skylit, dubbed “floating seahorses.” After being launched in 2009, the project has been sluggish to get off the ground; however, it looks to have picked up momentum recently.
- The Heart of Europe is an impressive structure in its own right, but it is also something of a miracle when you consider the history of the world, which by all accounts should have reached its nadir years ago.
- Kleindienst Group is a private limited company.
- His objective is to lure some of the world’s wealthiest investors and real estate moguls to purchase a few islands and use the proceeds to elevate Dubai’s international standing in the process.
- Also, a number of people made purchases, notably investors and real estate tycoons.
- When Richard Branson purchased the islands that represented Great Britain in 2006, he did so in record time.
- However, as a result of the global financial crisis, The World has encountered difficulties.
- Prior to 2009, Dubai World had accumulated $25 billion in debt, and as the economy collapsed, the city sought a means to restructure its debt.

Due to concerns that Dubai’s faltering real estate market will not provide them with a return on their investment, several investors have decided not to finance further development projects on their private islands.
The current advertisement for cruises on Nakheel’s website, in contrast to the 2012 request for cruises, no longer references a voyage around the world, but rather a tour of the Palm Jumeirah.
With a beach club, bars, lounges, and restaurants, it is a great place to come for a day or for business gatherings.
In addition to these economic difficulties, the World presents a logistical difficulty for customers.
Each year, between 4 and 16 inches of sand is washed into the Persian Gulf as a result of normal erosion, according to a report published by Kleindienst in 2014.
In addition, the size of each island varies.
A boat or seaplane is required to access your own private island or any of the other islands because they are more than two miles distant from the shoreline.
The restricted transit choices, on the other hand, might be a deal breaker for the fraction of inhabitants who are merely want to establish a sense of community on the islands.
Google Earth is a virtual globe that allows you to see the world from any location on the planet.
The construction of the chain has been overseen by the Dutch firm Royal HaskoningDHV since the announcement of the project.
As a result of the global financial crisis, the project was halted in 2008, according to Ronald Stive, director of maritime and coastal projects at the corporation.
It didn’t matter whether the finished reef was a technical triumph; the pause meant that no one would be able to build on top of it.
“However, it will take time.” Since 2007, Stive claims that his company has done business with six different investors.
Only in recent years has Dubai been able to emerge from the ruins of the global economic meltdown, which has put Sheikh Mohammed’s master plan on hold and left The World in a state of perpetual limbo.
“It’s just a piece of undeveloped land.” Maybe for the time being.
A scale model of The Heart of Europe is seen here.
A short boat journey away from the nation of their choice, just like at Epcot in Disneyworld, guests will find themselves in the same situation as they are at Epcot.
It will allow you to eat dinner in Germany, breakfast in France, and lunch in Italy, according to the guide.
The Heart of Europe is taking place right now.
Miniscule aspects, such as how people will travel to their islands and whether or not the general public wants them, are of less importance.
Firms with a lower level of ambition may require more resources.

(CNN)- Dubai World is widely regarded as the city’s standard bearer for international investments. It is the holding company controlled by the government of Dubai that is at the heart of the city’s push to diversify its economy into property, leisure, and investment – both locally and internationally. In the United Arab Emirates, the city of Dubai is the most populous of the seven Emirates, each of which is a sovereign state ruled by a Muslim monarch. As a result of a proclamation issued by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, Dubai World was officially founded in March of 2006.
There are four primary investment arms at Dubai World: Transportation and Logistics, Drydocks and Maritime, Urban Development and Investment, and Financial Services, among others.

Dubai Maritime City is a government-run enterprise charged with transforming the Emirate into a major shipbuilding and maritime transportation center.
It is a world-class investment corporation that has made significant investments outside of Dubai, particularly in Europe, the United States, and South Africa.
Nakheel, the property development arm of Dubai World, is perhaps the most well-known of the company’s assets.
Also planned is The Universe, which would consist of a series of man-made islands in the shapes of the sun, the moon, and planets that would wrap around Nakheel’s The World project.
In January 2009, Nakheel stated that construction on the ambitious proposal to construct Nakheel Tower, a 200-story skyscraper that would soar to 1km in height and become the world’s tallest structure, will be delayed for 12 months.
