Commentary: India’s most vital hub city isn’t in India

You’ll probably notice a trend if you look up at the departures screens at any big Indian airport: the names Dubai and Abu Dhabi show regularly on the flickering screens. A little more than one out of every three foreign travellers in India is on their way to or returning from the United Arab Emirates. • Over $12 billion worth of remittances are sent to India each year by Indians who work in the United Arab Emirates, making the UAE India’s largest single source of remittances.
• The Dubai Land Department reports that Indians are also the country’s largest foreign investors in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

During the founding of global airline giant Emirates in 1985, the carrier, which was dubbed the “Middle East carrier,” picked Mumbai and Delhi as the destinations for its first three flights: Mumbai was the first, and Delhi was the second (the other was Karachi, Pakistan).
