Earth Day 2021: we are ready for the future

On April 22nd, we will commemorate Earth Day under the theme “Restore Our Earth.” With a consensus that a healthy planet is not a choice — it is a need — the yearly campaign strives to collect support for the environment and mobilize coordinated action for saving the Earth in order to protect the Earth. In recent years, climate action has had a prominent position in Earth Day celebrations. The Biden administration is hosting a global leaders’ summit on Earth Day to galvanize efforts to address the climate crisis and pave the way for more ambitious climate commitments that can put the world on track to meet the targets of the Paris Agreement.

This is a clear recognition of the power of Earth Day. Given the Paris Agreement’s broad aim of net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the second half of this century, carbon neutrality is emerging as one of the touchstones for defining climate ambition in the second half of this century.

Pledges to go carbon-neutral

In recent months, a number of nations and private sector firms have proclaimed their intentions to become carbon-neutral. Currently, neutrality agreements apply to 70 percent of the world’s economic activity. The economical rationale for taking immediate action on climate change is unambiguous. According to a 2018 report by the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate, conservative estimates of direct economic gains from strong climate action by 2030, as compared to business as usual, were $26 trillion.

Notably, a low-carbon future can only become a reality with the active participation and complete commitment of the business sector, which is now lacking.

Another group is in charge of regulating their resource usage, while another is in charge of monitoring and reporting their emissions.

Net zero emissions by 2050

Examples that give us reason to be optimistic include Etihad Airways, which has pledged to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, making it the first airline in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and one of the first in the industry to set a target of this magnitude, and Majid Al Futtaim Holding, which has announced a long-term goal to produce more energy and water than it consumes, with the goal of achieving a Net Positive business model by 2040.

World Environment Day: How the UAE is Becoming More Green Friendly

The topic for World Environment Day2021 is “Restore Our Earth,” and today is World Environment Day2021. The United Arab Emirates has been a long-time supporter of environmental preservation through a variety of projects. Heikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, stated, “Our goal is to create a truly inclusive environment that not only meets the needs of Dubai’s diverse population, but also inspires them to tap into their creative and innovative capacities and realise their true potential.” Here are some of the actions taken by the United Arab Emirates to contribute to the improvement of the environment.

Dubai 2040:

As the city’s population and tourists continue to rise, green and recreational spaces, as well as areas allocated to public parks, will double in size. Approximately 60% of the emirate’s total land area will be comprised of nature reserves and rural natural habitats. Plentiful green corridors will be built to connect service and residential areas with work places and to ease the flow of walkers and bicycle riders as well as alternative modes of transportation across the city, in collaboration with developers and government agencies.

Reducing Carbon emissions

According to its second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) under the Paris Agreement, the country has set a higher target for emissions reductions and is investing in nuclear energy and renewables as well as carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), electrification of transportation, sustainable agri-tech, blue and green hydrogen, and other clean technologies. Its UAE Strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution is centered on achieving future water and food security through bioengineering and renewable energy, enhancing economic security through digitalization and blockchain technologies, and optimizing the use of satellite data for urban planning and development.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park

When completed, the 50 billion dirham ($13.6 billion) investment by the Dubai Energy and Water Authority (DEWA) would be able to power up to 1.3 million households, resulting in a reduction in carbon emissions of 6.5 million tonnes per year. Sunlight will be focused at the top of the tower by heliostats, which will be used to heat a flow of molten salts that will be fed into the reactor. The heat is utilized to power steam turbines, which in turn generate energy for the grid.

Abu Dhabi’s 2030 Energy Efficiency Strategy

As part of an agreement with developer Miral, Masdar, the UAE’s operator of utility-scale renewable energy projects, will develop the world’s largest rooftop-located solar PV system and provide an estimated 16,000 solar modules across the Warner Brothers theme park roof area in Abu Dhabi, which spans 36,000 square meters in area. The project will be the world’s largest rooftop-located solar PV system.

Barakah Nuclear Plant

The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, located in the Al Dhafra district of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, is one of the world’s biggest nuclear power plants, with four APR-1400 units. It is one of the world’s largest nuclear power stations. In the meanwhile, the 1400 MW Unit 1 is already generating steady, dependable, and environmentally friendly power around the clock, with three further units expected to start up in the next years. As a result, ENEC is currently in charge of the greatest decarbonisation effort undertaken by any industry in the United Arab Emirates to date.

In the same way that other energy plants do, the power produced at the Barakah Plant is fed into the national grid, allowing it to provide safe, clean electricity to homes and businesses throughout the country.

Plant for the Planet is the brainchild of Simran Vedvyas, the founder of SynergYYouth. Earth Hour 2015 is the world’s premier environmental event. As part of its efforts to promote energy conservation, environmental education, and youth leadership during this Earth Day season, the Earth Day Network is pleased to partner withSynergYtheDubai Municipality,Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA),AccorandGoumbook as the organizations promote energy conservation, environmental education, and youth leadership.

Since then, the group has grown and made significant contributions to the Dubai community, most notably through the Earth Hour campaign and the Plant for the Planet campaign.
The first event of the Plant for the Planet campaign was held on February 28th, with the planting of 100 trees at Al Warsan Landfill in Dubai, and the second event will take place in April, on the occasion of Earth Day, both with the support of the Dubai Municipality.
The previous planting initiatives, which were coordinated by Vedvyas and the Dubai Municipality, were enormously effective in terms of teaching the public, particularly students, about environmental deterioration and how they might lessen their environmental impact.
The Dubai Municipality is widely considered as one of the major governmental entities in the United Arab Emirates, delivering a wide range of services to the local population while also encouraging the city’s green transformation.
Earth Hour, which will take place on March 28th, less than a month before Earth Day, will be held.

Earth Day: Is humanity finally waking up to the serious issue of climate change?
