In June 2012, two Emirati women launched a Twitter campaign to encourage international tourists to respect their culture and comply to the country’s dress code, which was then in effect. She was a “guest” of Dubai police for three days before she was given a “dressing-down” (pun intended) by a judge and the accusations against her were withdrawn (also pun intended). Similarly, in Sharjah and Ajman, violating the code will be treated more harshly than elsewhere.

Things to Know Before You Go to the UAE

Begin with the most obvious of the three options. The United Arab Emirates is a country in the Middle East that has a border with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf of Oman. It’s a country made up of seven emirates (think of them as states), with Abu Dhabi serving as the capital and largest city. Dubai, Abu Dhabi’s flashy neighbor and neighboring emirate, is roughly an hour and a half away by vehicle. It is the world’s most expensive city. Being so varied and worldwide, it’s no surprise that the United Arab Emirates has a large expat community, which accounts for more than 80 percent of the total population.

(More on this in a moment!) Despite the fact that Dubai and Abu Dhabi are Muslim emirates, they are far more liberal than some of their neighboring countries.
It is always necessary to BE RESPECTFUL of the local culture, regardless of whether you are covering yourself from head to toe or not.
For the most part, imagine classic, elegant and timeless clothes that you will feel both comfortable and stylish in while keeping sensitive of the people and their way of life.

Although foreign guests are not encouraged to dress in traditional attire, I thought I’d include this information for the benefit of anyone who might be interested. In one of the malls in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you’re likely to encounter some of the local ladies dressed in anabayas, which are all-black robes with a white abaya on top. Make no mistake about it, they are doing this mostly because they want to, not because they have to. The traditional clothing is not mandated by law in any way. They are worn with black sheilahs, which cover the head and hair but leave the face exposed, as is customary in Islam.

In their trendy dark shades and the most recent Chanel purse, they exude elegance and refinement while maintaining a mysterious air about them, leaving an irresistible trail of oud smell in their wake.

When is the Best Time to Visit Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

The wearing of traditional garb is not demanded of foreign tourists, but I wanted to provide this for the benefit of anyone who would be interested in learning more. In one of the malls in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, you’re likely to encounter some of the local ladies dressed in anabayas, which are all-black robes with a white sash around the neck. It is important to note that these people are doing this mostly out of a sense of want rather than obligation. Law does not require people to wear in their customary attire.

Beautifully embroidered on several of these abayhas and sheilahs, and the women who wear them are no less gorgeous than the garments themselves.

Summer in DubaiAbu Dhabi (mid-May to early September):

Temperatures are blistering (imagine between 38°C and 42°C/101°F and 108°F), and it’s just too hot to sit outside or lay on a deck chair. Fortunately, there are some shaded areas nearby. I’m guilty of having visited the region twice for my birthday at the end of May, and after each trip, I vow to myself that I’ll never go back. but I never seem to learn my lesson.

Winter in DubaiAbu Dhabi (December, January, February):

Winter is defined as the period between December and February, although, in contrast to Europe, the weather is nice throughout this period, with the rare storm. However, the greatest time to visit Dubai and Abu Dhabi is between October and March or April, with my personal favourite being the end of November and beginning of December, depending on your preferences. You should visit not just because the weather in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is wonderful at this time of year, and the sea temperature is warm from the summer months, but also because you can attend the Formula One Grand Prix while you are there (which is a whole other essay in itself!).

In fact, even in the ‘coldest’ months of the year—January and February—you can anticipate pleasant weather, with lows of roughly 12 degrees Celsius/54 degrees Fahrenheit and highs of 24 degrees Celsius/75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi Dress Code

Before I put together some outfit inspiration for all of the many sorts of places you could visit, I thought it would be helpful to answer some of the most often asked questions that I’ve seen posed in forums and on social media platforms. It is permissible to dress in summer dresses and shorts, but only if they are elegant and polite in nature.
Shorts should be of a respectable length, but they should not be too short or too long.
Culottes and other longer shorts are also acceptable.

Crop tops are also OK IF they are worn with high-waisted jeans, but they should not be worn if they expose your stomach. Just keep in mind to be tasteful, refined, and courteous. Consider this: would you be comfortable going out with your coworkers dressed in this manner?

What NOT to Pack for the UAE

Listed below is a list of items that you should usually have at home:

Hot pants or short shorts
Brazilian bikini bottoms (more on this later)
Bodycon dresses
Hot pants or short shorts
Jeans with very low-cut waists (especially when they display itsy-bitsy underpants beneath them)
Miniskirts that are too short to be called miniskirts
Basically, anything that is translucent or thin enough to display your undergarments V-neck blouses, plunging necklines, and anything else that displays cleavage are all acceptable.

Depending on where you go and how long you stay, you may or may not see other visitors wearing these items. Please do not interpret this as a green light for you to follow suit. When wearing these goods in souks or rural regions, you will draw undue attention to yourself and are likely to insult the locals as a result. No, you will not be arrested or expelled from any locations; however, you may receive remarks from the locals (both men and women) requesting that you conceal your identity. In this scenario, the most appropriate course of action is to apologize, cover up with the shawl you had neatly prepared, and continue with your day.

What to Wear in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Starting with some wardrobe inspiration for the areas where you’re most likely to spend the majority of your time: hotels, restaurants, and shopping malls, to name a few. Along with that, I’ve put up some adorable clothes for two destinations that everyone should visit: the Burj Khalifa and the Burj al Arab. Culottes and a puff-sleeved shirt are the perfect combination for a trip to the malls while appearing stylish. Because of the loose attire, you can wander about feeling comfortable despite the hot heat, while also maintaining cultural sensitivity.

When it comes to being comfortable and beautiful, this type of attire is ideal for strolling around Dubai Mall, as well as for breakfast, brunch, or lunch.
Because of the high temperatures outdoors, air conditioning is turned on in every building in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, even bus stations.

In addition, flip flops are allowed, although it is better not to wear them around malls or to restaurants, mostly for reasons of comfort.

Having a fashionable kaftan that you can drape over your bikini and go to lunch at your hotel’s seaside café is essential.

What to Wear to a Mosque in Dubai and Abu Dhabi

Needless to say, mosques have a more stringent guest code, which should be followed by all visitors to the mosque. Both men and women must have their arms and legs covered all the way down to their ankles. Clothes should be flowy and opaque—nothing too sheer or see-through is recommended. I would also recommend choosing a simple design that does not include any slogans or logos. Female guests are likewise expected to cover their hair while entering the building. Some mosques may even give the abaya, and the majority of them will provide the headscarf, as well.

It’s a good idea to have it along in case something happens.

What to Wear to a Dubai Desert Safari

The greatest desert safaris in Dubai are those in the Arabian Desert.
