The United Arab Emirates now plays a significant role in the provision of relief and development assistance throughout the world, thanks to organizations such as the Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, which were established by Sheikh Zayed before the establishment of the UAE, as well as organizations such as the Red Crescent Society.
In 2004, his eldest son, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, succeeded him as President of the United Arab Emirates and as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, respectively.
His Royal Highness Following the death of his brother, Sheikh Maktoum, in 2006, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, was appointed Vice President of the Federation by the Council of Ministers.
