Because of its strategic partnership with Turkey’s small business owners, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has enjoyed decades of political success in the nation. Afghanistan’s Present Failure Lies in its Past Design

Benjamin Hopkins provides an important historical perspective on the failure of the American enterprise in Afghanistan, demonstrating that it had nothing to do with Afghan corruption or a lack of national unity as these issues were seen in Washington. As a result, while many of the problems facing the Afghan state today—such as the country’s reliance on foreign aid, a lack of legitimacy among the population, and an inability to provide for the public good—are seen as manifestations of the country’s failure, Hopkins demonstrates how they are in fact consciously constructed elements of its original blueprint, embedded by outside imperial powers at the modern state’s inception.

Whatever Happened to Dignity? The Politics of Citizenship in Post-Revolution Tunisia

Tunisia’s 2011 revolution, which toppled dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, was characterized by a call for dignity as its central demand. Young people and other underprivileged groups are mobilizing for everyday concerns such as clean streets, and Nadia Marzouki investigates how that demand has influenced the tactics of these groups. It is a different sort of reaction to the demand for dignity than President Kais Saied’s recent power grab, in that it attempts to eradicate corruption rather than combat it through transitional justice.

The Enduring Taste of Hope—A Poem and Interview with Khaled Mattawa

“Now That We Have Tasted Hope,” a poem by Libyan-American poet Khaled Mattawa, was written shortly after Libyans rose up in protest against Muammar al-ruthless Qaddafi’s authoritarian dictatorship in February 2011. His poem, which was widely circulated, beautifully expressed the mixture of relief and sorrow, despair and optimism, and despair and hope felt by those who participated in, or were inspired by, the Arab revolutions. Atef Said conducted an interview with Mattawa in addition to publishing the poem here.

Jerusalem Youth at the Forefront of 2021’s Unity Intifada

Khaled Mattawa, a Libyan-American poet, penned “Now That We Have Tasted Hope” shortly after Libyans rose up in protest against the ruthless authoritarian rule of Muammar al-Qaddafi in February 2011. While his poem was widely disseminated, it was particularly effective in capturing the mixture of relief and sorrow, hopelessness and despair felt by those who participated in or were inspired by the Arab revolutions.

The poem is being presented here as well as an interview with Mattawa, conducted by Atef Said, who talks about his work helping artists in Libya and the poem’s relevance to revolution. “Revolutionary Afterlives” is a new article that will appear in the Winter 2021 edition of Middle East Report.
