However, despite its status as a sophisticated international hub, Dubai is still a predominantly Muslim country, and the culture still reflects this.
Even before I arrived to Dubai, one of the most often asked questions I received was: what should visiting ladies dress in Dubai?
The rumors: “my cousin’s best friend went to Dubai in 2012 and she told me…”
If you start inquiring about on the internet or to your friends and relatives, you’ll hear reports that all women are required to wear the hijab and the abaya when they leave their homes. As someone who lived in Dubai in 2016 and again in 2021, I can tell you that this city, in particular, changes year after year, and that regulations and social standards that were in place only a few years ago are now radically different from what they were.
