Even before I arrived to Dubai, one of the most often asked questions I received was: what should visiting ladies dress in Dubai?

The rumors: “my cousin’s best friend went to Dubai in 2012 and she told me…”

If you start inquiring about on the internet or to your friends and relatives, you’ll hear reports that all women are required to wear the hijab and the abaya when they leave their homes. Some claim that the expectations of outsiders and natives are different, and that tourists should feel free to do anything they wish. Some people believe that you can wear a bathing suit to the beach, but only a one-piece suit. But wait, that girl from the workplace claimed she went to Kite Beach in a bikini and didn’t have any difficulties with her attire.

What are you supposed to believe?

As someone who lived in Dubai in 2016 and again in 2021, I can tell you that this city, in particular, changes year after year, and that regulations and social standards that were in place only a few years ago are now radically different from what they were.

• The use of cigarettes and hookah is prevalent in restaurants, nightclubs, and public venues. Living with or having sexual relations with your partner when you are not married is prohibited and punishable by law

The dress code in Abu Dhabi appears to be the same as it is in Dubai. No. Abu Dhabi is a little more traditional than Dubai in terms of architecture. I prefer to compare Abu Dhabi to Beyonce and Dubai to Kim Kardashian, to name a few of examples.
