The 2015 Women’s Dubai Sevens was the first tournament of the 2015–16 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, which took place in the United Arab Emirates. Women’s Dubai Sevens was place on 3-4 December 2015 at The Sevens Stadium in Dubai, and was the fourth edition of the tournament. The tournament was part of the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series.

The teams are divided into three groups of four teams each. The pools are determined by a random drawing. Every team in its pool plays every other team in their pool just once. The top two teams from each pool progress to the Cup/Plate , while the top 2 third place teams also participate in the Cup/Plate. The other teams from each group compete in a playoff for the right to represent their group in the Bowl.

HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens – Dubai 2015
5th of December, 2015 Fiji defeated England 28-17 in the Dubai Sevens, despite a late Phil Burgess try. With a Tom Bowen try, England gained an early lead in the semifinals against the United States, but they were down by 28 points at halftime and were unable to recover. A second Bowen try and a late touchdown by Burgess gave the four-time champions a more reasonable scoreline in Dubai, but Fiji’s first-half barrage was enough to secure the victory in the World Series Sevens opening. Ben Ryan, the coach of the Fiji national team, won his fourth Dubai Sevens title in six years with victory.
Fiji have been crowned dubai7s winners, marking an excellent start to the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
The Americans were led by two touchdowns from Will Holder, with scores from Folau Niua, Kevin Swiryn, and Perry Baker adding a flourish to the final score of 31-12 for Mike Friday’s side.
The Blitzboks rallied back from a 14-0 deficit, aided by tries from Sam Myers and Ed Jenkins, to draw level with a double from Kwagga Smith in the second half.
French players defeated Scotland 24-14 to win the bowl championship and claim three victories in their three matches on the second day of the tournament in Dubai, while Canada defeated Japan 19-17 to take the shield title.
Men’s Eagles Sevens: Dubai 2015 Breakdown
The Men’s Eagles Sevens followed up their HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Cup victory in London at the tail end of last season with a third-place finish at the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens last weekend, moving them into third place in the 2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series standings behind the USA and England. THE CITY OF CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICAN – With a third-place performance in the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens this weekend, the Men’s Eagles Sevens followed up their Cup victory in London at the tail end of the previous season to move up to third in the 2015-16 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series standings, which they have held since 2011.
In fact, until the Eagles’ historic triumph in the first-ever Cup Final in London in May, when they rose to sixth in the Series rankings, the United States had never been rated higher than seventh, and that was following the third leg of the 2000-01 season.
It is evident to see the lads’ work ethic, their confidence, and their determination to stick it out and compete against the so-called ‘Super Rugby’ nations – and definitely to come out and show the world that they are competitors today – in the aftermath of the match, he added.
Dubai Breakdown
The United States’ victory over Portugal in Pool C became the team’s seventh consecutive victory on the Series, dating back to the 2014-15 London tournament, setting a new record for the squad. In addition, the Eagles scored seven tries in the victory, while the attention on Friday was centered on the two converted tries that were allowed. If Zack Test had not made a try-saving tackle outside the corner of the in-goal area in the waning seconds of the first half, the score would have been three.

A total of four changes were made to the starting seven for the Third-Place Match against New Zealand, which was decided by a single run for most of the battle. Wednesday night’s game was important because it allowed the players to get some much-needed rest while simultaneously providing them with an opportunity to test if they were capable of stepping up to the plate. “Wow, didn’t they do that,” Friday exclaimed after the game. The likes of Kevin Swiryn and Will Holder made their first appearances on the Series since the closing rounds of the 2013-14 season, and they made it count with two tries against New Zealand.

Danny Barrett and Andrew Durutalowerwere unstoppable forces in the Eagles’ forwards last season, according to the eyes of the outside world. With Barrett out injured and Durutalo out on loan for the first few months of the season, Garret Bender and Matai Leutawere tasked with taking over at forward with Test in Dubai. In the absence of Danny and ‘Dru,’ Friday praised Bender’s participation in the breakdown as well as his work ethic around the field. “I believe Bender’s contribution in the breakdown and his work ethic around the pitch were first class, and this was picked up by commentators,” Friday stated.
Cape Town Catch Up
Meanwhile, the squad is dealing with the expected bumps and bruises that come from playing six international sevens matches in the span of two days, it is also attempting to correct some of the flaws in its game that lost it two victories and a spot in the Cup Final versus Fiji. Fiji, the Dubai Champion and the current holder of the 2014-15 Series Championship, performed admirably in Dubai, in contrast to many other teams in recent history. Despite this, according to Ben Ryan, the team’s head coach, Fiji improved from an average of.8 rucks per try in the semifinals to maybe “double digits” in the final versus England.
England was able to contain the quick-moving Fiji assault for stretches of the Final, but they were ultimately defeated and received a ‘L’ at the end of it.
“We’ve got a good mix of different genres,” Friday explained.
We really want to play a balanced style of sevens; we want to be able to employ a variety of offensive weapons and play in a variety of ways.” There is no restriction on our ability to play in a certain manner, and if there were, we would become predictable and soon would be able to be figured out.
A winnable pool, combined with an overall solid performance in Dubai, should instill the type of confidence in the Eagles that coach Friday is looking for as his team prepares for the Olympics, which are just eight months away in Rio de Janeiro.

Dubai 7s
In Dubai on Saturday, South Africa won the championship after defeating previous season’s series winners and Olympic gold medalists Fiji, 26-14, to capture the title. Cecil Afrika and Branco du Preez scored early tries for the Blitzboks, who took a 14-7 lead into half-time. However, Fijian skipper Osea Kolinisau responded with a try of his own to bring the score to 14-7. Almost immediately after the restart, Jerry Tuwai scored a touchdown beneath the posts, with the conversion bringing the score to 14-14.
That try provided his team the momentum they needed, and it was a final try from Seabelo Senatla that clinched the victory, increasing his tournament total of tries to 11 for the season.
“We didn’t allow Fiji to get into the game, and then they were forced to play catch-up rugby, which I believe worked to our benefit.” We may be optimistic heading into our home tournament in Cape Town next weekend, but we must start from the beginning and correct a few mistakes that occurred during the last event.
- Dan Norton scored a stunning four tries, while Richard de Carpentier and Charlie Hayter also scored to round up a 33-10 victory for the English and a successful weekend for the team in general.
- SEMI-FINAL ROUNDS A spectacular first half between Fiji and England featured tries from Ruaridh McConnochie and Dan Norton for England, as well as scores from Setareki Bituniyata and SamisoniViriviri for Fiji, which kept the fans on their feet for the most of the game.

South Africa, which has finished second in the series for four years in a row, stamped their mark on Pool B with victory against Scotland, the United States, and Uganda. Seabelo Senatla, the WorldRugby Sevens Player of the Year, demonstrated his ability with six tries on day one, two more than any other player in the competition. It will be the Blitzboks’ first meeting with New Zealand in the Cup quarter-finals, a team they lost to twice in the finals during their 2015-16 season, in Wellington and Vancouver, respectively.
