6. West Edmonton Mall (3.77 million sq ft)

Flickr/kenandaliyaFrom 1981 to 2004, the West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, was the world’s largest retail mall, and it is now the largest mall in the Americas, according to Forbes. Aside from its 800 stores and services, the mall is home to the world’s biggest indoor amusement park, the world’s largest indoor waterpark, and the Ice Palace, among other attractions (a scaled down version of a NHL regulation sized ice rink, so not the largest in the world). An 18-hole miniature golf course, a movie theater, and a bowling alley are some of the other activities at the resort.

5. Dubai Mall (3.77 million sq ft)

Flickr/Chu The Dubai Mall is a component of the Burj Khalifa complex, which includes the world’s largest man-made construction, the Burj Khalifa. Because it covers more than 12 million square feet (an area similar to more than 50 soccer fields), the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest retail mall when measured in total area; yet, when measured in leasable space, it is about equal to the West Edmonton Mall. It has almost 1,200 stores, including the world’s largest sweets store, an ice arena, an IMAX theater, a SEGA gaming center (including a 3D bowling game), a 5 star luxury hotel, 22 movie theaters, and more than 120 restaurants and cafés.

4. SM Mall of Asia (4.2 million sq ft)

The Flickr/Manila Daily Photo of the Day Opening in 2006, the SM Mall of Asia in Metro Manila, Philippines, is comprised of four buildings that are connected by walkways. The mall has a total area of 100,000 square meters. It is equipped with a 20-seat tram that transports consumers throughout the mall’s grounds. In addition to an IMAX cinema with one of the largest 3D displays in the world, one of the mall’s primary attractions is a zoo. The mall also has an ice skating rink that is the size of an Olympic rink.

3. CentralWorld (4.62 million sq ft)

Flickr/UweBKK The eight-story CentralWorld retail mall in Bangkok, which first opened its doors in 1990, is the country’s largest shopping center. Siam Paragon, on the other hand, was targeted to upper-class consumers, whilst this retail mall was geared to middle-class consumers. On the 19th of May this year, anti-government protesters set fire to a number of structures, including the CentralWorld building. For two days, the blaze raged, and the Zen department store was completely destroyed by the flames.

2. Golden Resources Mall (6.0 million sq ft)

Flickr/star5112 Golden Resources Mall in China, which was 1.5 times the size of the Mall of America from 2004 to 2005, was the world’s largest retail mall at the time. In spite of the fact that the mall’s developer had predicted that it would attract 50,000 consumers per day, the actual number was significantly lower in 2004, with as few as 20 shoppers per hour on some days.

One issue was that the costs of the majority of the products sold were considerably above the means of most ordinary Chinese people to afford. Due to its position outside of Beijing’s central business district, Golden Resources Shopping Mall was inaccessible to overseas customers as well.

1. New South China Mall (6.46 million sq ft)

Photograph courtesy of Remko Tanis The New South China Mall in Dongguan, China, is the world’s largest mall in terms of gross leasable space, surpassing even the Mall of America. The mall is divided into seven zones, each of which is based after a different foreign city, featuring a replica of the Arc de Triomphe and a canal complete with gondolas. There is also an indoor-outdoor roller coaster in the park. What it lacks is a steady stream of clients. Since its inception in 2005, the mall has experienced a significant decrease in the number of people that visit it.

The only portions of the mall that are filled are those at the entrance, where a number of Western fast food restaurants may be found.

I spent 2 days at The Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping malls, which is so big it contains an aquarium — but I kept getting too lost to actually enjoy the shopping

Outside the Dubai Mall’s aquarium, I was a little befuddled, and I snapped a photo of all the mall’s floors. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

  • It took me two separate days to navigate the Dubai Mall, despite the fact that it is one of the world’s largest shopping centers
  • However, I did discover that it was packed with entertainment options to break up the shopping experience, such as selfie rooms and a giant aquarium
  • However, I did not find the mall to be particularly exciting

At terms of land size, the Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping mall, and I was intrigued to see what it was like to shop in a place with more than 10 million square feet of space in a city that is often considered to be one of the most affluent places on the planet. However, unlike its competitor Mall of the Emirates, which I visited while there and tried out the ski slope, it does offer a large aquarium and access to the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest structure, which is a nice bonus.

Yet despite this, I found the experience to be taxing, since I became disoriented on many occasions, was unable to get the mall’s navigation systems to operate, and spent 20 minutes trying to find a way out before giving up and queueing for 10 minutes to hail a cab.

As an example, here’s what my trips were like:

But first, I actually needed to get there — and that journey gave me a glimpse of the scale of what was in store. I decided to take the metro, which was very convenient until I realized that the raised passage from the train to the mall took 10 whole minutes to walk down.

Although the mall is small, it does an excellent job at providing entertainment and light to keep things from becoming too claustrophobic or overpowering.

I went on two separate days and still couldn’t get a handle on the area, which was frustrating.

It also felt bizarre that the journey was filled with ads for the mall itself. Everyone in th passage was going to the mall already, so why bother?

A few minutes later and, finally, I’d made it!

The first thing I noticed was just how large every individual store was — you couldn’t see the back of most.

The mall is divided up so it never actually feels that big when you wander around. Every section almost feels like its own mall, so it takes a while to get to grips with the sheer scale of the complex.

It felt like its own, self-contained mall, filled with luxury brands.

Even the cafés were extremely decadent.

I made my out of the luxury section, and got another glimpse into the glitz of the mall. From inside the huge Nike store, I could see the famous Dubai Fountain.

Because I went during the middle of the day, the fountains were not running. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

The mall was filled with signs, but they didn’t make things that much clearer to me. Aquarium? Underwater Zoo? Are those not the same thing?

It was time to return to wandering around, where I saw things like “selfie rooms” that I assumed were designed to break up the slog of navigating the place.

I ducked in to one that was filled with lights. (My selfie game is not very strong).

There were also decorated walls that were hugely popular with visitors.

After walking around some more, I was exhausted and decided it was time to leave. But there was a problem: I couldn’t figure out how, unless I took the metro again.

There were no signs for an exit, and it took me 15 minutes to reach a door that looked like it led to the outside. I wanted to order an Uber, but ended up crossing an enclosed taxi rank and emerging in a huge car park.

I desperately wanted to get out, so I settled on taking a regular taxi. I walked five minutes to the taxi rank entrance. and then had to queue for 10 minutes.

I thought I was free of the place, but ended up back there with a colleague five days later. This time, I decided it was time to test the mall’s app, which uses your location to tell you how to get to particular stores. It worked great.

. until it didn’t. It sometimes just didn’t give the proper information, so we had to go to the information screens. There were always queues of lost people waiting to use them, and not nearly enough for the size of the mall.

We ended up in entirely new parts of the mall that I didn’t discover last time, including luxury jewelry and watch stores that had closed doors and heavy security.

There were also lots of famous American stores, like Bloomingdale’s.

Leaving turned out to be a huge struggle — again. We needed to find a certain hotel connected to the mall to get to the bar on top of the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, but neither the app, Google Maps, nor the information screens were any help.

We actually had to ask staff at the concierge service for help twice, and were still a bit confused by what we had to do. We ended up leaving through what appeared to be very fancy entrance to the Fashion Village, which felt like somewhere we absolutely were not supposed to walk through.
