Alternatively, take an abra boat trip around Madinat Jumeriah to see the Burj Al Arab from a different, but as spectacular, perspective.

Dubai is the name of the emirate’s capital and largest city, which is also where 90 percent of the emirate’s population resides, in and around the city. According to population estimates for 2019, the country’s population was 2.8 million, having increased by more than 230,000 people in the previous year. More than 4 million people live there during the daytime, which includes those who aren’t citizens or residents.
Area and Land Expansion
The metropolitan region around the city encompasses over 1,500 square miles (3,885 square kilometers), with the city proper being approximately 15.5 square miles (25 square kilometers) (35 sq km). In addition to the development of man-made islands in the gulf, which will be known as Marsa Al Arab, as well as some construction in the desert areas, Dubai’s land area is being expanded. Despite the fact that the majority of the 300 islands in the vicinity are undeveloped, construction in the area known as The Heart of Europe resumed in 2016 after having been suspended in 2008 during the global recession.
History of Dubai

It is home to the world’s largest mall, which is only one of more than 70 luxury retail malls in the city. One of the most notable features of the Mall of the Emirates is Ski Dubai, which is the only indoor ski slope in the Middle East.

LATEST UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2020 During a recent talk with an American acquaintance, I discovered that he had never heard of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), believed Dubai was the capital of Saudi Arabia, and believed that their identity was Muslim. Yes, this is true! Where can I even begin?! I attempted to give him the whole tale, but it ended up being a little too long-winded. Since the United Arab Emirates is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, I assumed the uncertainty would have subsided, but it appears that is not the case at all!

Allow me to set the record straight:

Yes, if you appreciate learning about and experiencing new cultures, then absolutely! There are only so many things that can be done while lying on a Thai beach, so once you’ve checked that box, it’s time to put yourself through some serious challenges. There are no tourist buses in the Middle East, no hostels full of college students, and you are truly on the road in this region. And Dubai is an excellent starting location for such an endeavor. This part of the UAE is far more liberal (in the Western sense) than much of the rest of the country, and it serves as an excellent introduction before you embark on excursions to Syria or Iraq, such as the ones I took my readers on (read about them on those links, they were fantastic trips!).
However, the UAE is not inexpensive, so don’t plan on staying for too long.
It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Nope! Dubai is a city, not a country, in every sense of the word. The United Arab Emirates, sometimes known as the UAE, is, nonetheless, a country. And I hope that has helped to clarify things, since it can be pretty perplexing at times. Dubai is renowned for its lavish Palm Islands, a man-made archipelago off the city’s shore that is immediately recognized from the air. Based on the success of the Palm, Dubai’s ruler, Sheikh Maktoum, envisioned an even more ambitious archipelago project in 2003: a set of islands structured like a map of the world. The idea was eventually scrapped. It appears, however, that the World Islands, in contrast to the Palm Islands, may have been a calamity of epic proportions on a worldwide scale. Construction on the World Islands began in September 2003 and is expected to be completed in 2007.
The World Islands, which included one island for each nation (with the exception of Israel), occupied an area of more than 20 square miles in the Persian Gulf.
Unfortunately for the archipelago’s creators, the archipelago turned out to be only faintly recognisable after all these years.
Central America is virtually nonexistent, Australia is a jumble of five rectangular strips of sand, and Europe, Africa, and Asia have blended into a completely indistinguishable glob of sand and sandstone.
As a result, 291 of the 300 World Islands have been left underdeveloped, and they continue to be little more than sand today.
The following nine islands have been developed as of 2016: Lebanon Island, Pete’s Island, the six islands that make up The Heart of Europe resort, and the island named after Formula One racing driver Michael Schumacher (named after the seven-time Formula One World Champion).
Despite the fact that the whole continents of Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America are deserted patches of sand, these continents remain such.
