Where Is Dubai? Facts, Geography, and History
Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, is depicted on this map. Kallie Szczepanski is a young woman from Poland. The most recent update was made on October 19, 2019. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Dubai (also known as Dubayy) is a city on the Persian Gulf that serves as the capital. Its southern border is with Abu Dhabi, its northern border with Sharjah, and its southern border with Oman. Dubai is surrounded by the Arabian Desert on three sides. In 2018, the city’s population surpassed 2 million people.
Oil was found off the coast of Dubai in 1966, and despite the fact that the emirate has less oil than its neighbor Abu Dhabi, oil profits, combined with other economic activities such as aluminum, have helped to make the emirate wealthy.
Real estate, financial services, international trade through its port, and tourism are among the other businesses of the city.
Capital and Major Cities
Dubai is the name of the emirate’s capital and largest city, which is also where 90 percent of the emirate’s population resides, in and around the city. According to population estimates for 2019, the country’s population was 2.8 million, having increased by more than 230,000 people in the previous year. More than 4 million people live there during the daytime, which includes those who aren’t citizens or residents.
Area and Land Expansion
The metropolitan region around the city encompasses over 1,500 square miles (3,885 square kilometers), with the city proper being approximately 15.5 square miles (25 square kilometers) (35 sq km). In addition to the development of man-made islands in the gulf, which will be known as Marsa Al Arab, as well as some construction in the desert areas, Dubai’s land area is being expanded. The newest manufactured islands, which will be completed in 2017, will cover 4 million square feet (.14 square miles,.37 square kilometers) and will extend the city’s shoreline by 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers).
These new man-made islands do not represent the first time that man-made islands have been added to the city’s shoreline.
Additionally, 300 private islands (dubbed “The World”) were constructed beginning in 2003 and sold to developers or affluent individuals for the purpose of building private luxury residences (or many mansions on a single island) and resorts.
Despite the fact that the majority of the 300 islands in the vicinity are undeveloped, construction in the area known as The Heart of Europe resumed in 2016 after having been suspended in 2008 during the global recession.
History of Dubai
The first recorded mention of Dubai as a city is found in the geographer Abu Abdullah al-(1014–1094) Bakri’s “Book of Geography,” which was published in 1095. When it was recognized as a hub of commerce and pearling in the Middle Ages, it was a major port city. The sheiks who governed Dubai struck a contract with the British in 1892, according to which the United Kingdom committed to “defend” Dubai from the Ottoman Empire for a period of time. During the Great Depression of the 1930s, Dubai’s pearl business came to a grinding halt.
The United Arab Emirates were formed in 1971 when Dubai combined with six other emirates to establish the United Arab Emirates.
Foreign investors were forced to evacuate Dubai during the first Gulf War in 1990 as a result of the military and political unrest in the region.
In addition to fossil resources, Dubai’s economy is now diversified, relying on real estate and construction, transportation exports, and financial services, among other things, to support itself.
It is home to the world’s largest mall, which is only one of more than 70 luxury retail malls in the city. One of the most notable features of the Mall of the Emirates is Ski Dubai, which is the only indoor ski slope in the Middle East.

What do they wear in Dubai?
Native Emiratis wear in their traditional attire while they are out in public. Men dress in white dishdashas, while women dress in a black Abaya, and Shayla is fond of her hair (NOT a full face Burqa). Even though tourists and expatriate residents are not required to wear in traditional attire in public areas, modesty in public places is expected. The rules, on the other hand, may get confusing, and many people have conflicting ideas on what is permissible or not in Dubai in the twenty first century.

Is Dubai A Country? What is the UAE?
LATEST UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2020 During a recent talk with an American acquaintance, I discovered that he had never heard of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), believed Dubai was the capital of Saudi Arabia, and believed that their identity was Muslim. Yes, this is true! Where can I even begin?! I attempted to give him the whole tale, but it ended up being a little too long-winded. Since the United Arab Emirates is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, I assumed the uncertainty would have subsided, but it appears that is not the case at all!
Is it one of the world’s 197 countries, or is it something else?
Allow me to set the record straight:
What is the UAE:
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an acronym for the country of the same name. In the United Arab Emirates, there are seven smaller ‘Emirates,’ which are akin to nations in their own right. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are two of the seven states on the list. The seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates are as follows:
- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, and Umm al Qaiwain are all cities in the United Arab Emirates.
Is Dubai considered a country? No.
What is the Capital of the UAE:
The capital of the United Arab Emirates is Abu Dhabi. Is Dubai considered a country?
Wait for a second, so you’re telling me neither Dubai nor Abu Dhabi is a country?!
Is Dubai considered a country? No, Dubai and Abu Dhabi are not countries, and neither is Dubai a state.
What continent is Dubai in?
Dubai is located on the Asian continent. Although it is located in the Middle East, it is also located within the Asian border.
So why does Dubai, Abu Dhabi etc have their own flags?
They are the flags of their respective emirates; all seven emirates have their own flags, yet they all fly the same flag of the United Arab Emirates (seen below). Is the Emirate of Dubai a country? The flag of the United Arab Emirates
How does their Government work?
The United Arab Emirates is governed by a President (the Emir of Abu Dhabi) and a Prime Minister (the Emir of Dubai). Each Emirate retains control over the territory within its borders. What continent does Dubai belong to?

So, is Dubai A Country After All?!
Nope! Dubai is a city, not a country, in every sense of the word. The United Arab Emirates, sometimes known as the UAE, is, nonetheless, a country. And I hope that has helped to clarify things, since it can be pretty perplexing at times. Hopefully, this has answered your ‘Is Dubai a country?’ conundrum, and remember that the United Arab Emirates is a fantastic place to visit, with excellent shopping opportunities (for more ideas on what to give to photographers, see this), and while I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s a typical backpacker haunt, it is certainly an interesting place to visit.
Is Dubai a city or a nation, and how can you tell the difference?
Remember, never travel without travel insurance! And never overpay for travel insurance!
Nope! Unlike other countries, Dubai is one hundred percent a city. Even yet, the United Arab Emirates (often known as the UAE) is considered to be a sovereign state. It may be rather complicated, so I hope this helps to clarify things. The UAE is a fantastic place to visit, and it’s also a fantastic place to shop (for more ideas on what to give photographers, check out this post), so while I wouldn’t describe it as a typical backpacker haunt, it is certainly an intriguing place to visit. So there you have it, a definitive answer to your ‘Is Dubai A Country?’ question.

Is Dubai In Asia?
Yes, it is correct. Despite the fact that many people refer to Dubai (and the United Arab Emirates) as being in the Middle East or even the Near East, Dubai (and the United Arab Emirates) are really in Western Asia. Western Asia, also known as Southwest Asia, Southwestern Asia, or West Asia, is a region that does not quite coincide with what we refer to as the Middle East, although it does share certain characteristics with it. Most notably, Egypt, one of the largest nations in the Middle East, has the majority of its land in North Africa and only controls a small portion of the Sinai Peninsula in Western Asia, while being one of the world’s most populous countries.
Depending on how the idea of Western Asia (and other similar words) is used, this area of Asia encompasses the nations listed below that are currently part of the world: In Anatolia, the following is true:
In the Arabian Peninsula, there are three main regions:
- Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen are among the countries represented.
In the Caucus of the South: In the Fertile Crescent, there are two types of crops: In the Iranian Plateau, there are a number of options. In the Mediterranean Sea, you’ll find: In the Sinai Peninsula, there are a number of options.

Why Is Dubai So Important?
It is indisputable that even those who are unable to locate Dubai (or the United Arab Emirates) on a map have heard of it and recognize it as a significant global player. Dubai’s most well-known landmarks
- It is only recently that Dubai’s international prominence has begun to develop
- The city’s history as a settlement has been established as far back as the late 11th century AD. During the first phase of the Islamic conquests, which covered the Arab Peninsula and parts of Africa (Somalia) under the early Caliphs and the Umayyads between 610 and 750 CE, the city was known as a trading post. During the Middle Age, the city was known as a trading post. In the early modern period, it was known as a trading post. In the early modern period, it was known as a trading post. In the early modern period, the city As a fishing community administered by Abu Dhabi in the 18th century, Dubai became a British protectorate in 1892, and it has remained thus ever since. With this, Dubai could be protected from a possible attack by the mighty Ottoman Empire
- Dubai’s prominence as a trade post continued to grow as a result of its closeness to Iran, which is located just across the Gulf from Dubai. Until the Great Depression, Dubai was well-known (at least in the region) as a major trading port for the international pearl trade. When the pearling industry collapsed in the 1930s, Dubai became impoverished, and many of its residents were forced to migrate elsewhere on the Peninsula and even further afield to other parts of the Gulf
- Dubai has historically had a tense relationship with neighboring Abu Dhabi, in which Britain has frequently acted as an arbiter
- Finally, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and the emirates of Sharjah, Umm al-Quwain, Ajman, and Quwain federated by The emirate of Ras Al Khaimah joined the federation a few months later, on February 10, 1972, marking the beginning of the Arab Spring.
Some of Dubai’s most exciting features, including those that have earned it the nicknames “the Vegas of the Middle East,” “the Veneice of the Middle East,” and “the Disney World of the Middle East, if Disney World were the size of San Francisco and situated in the desert,” have only been constructed in the last ten years. The city of Dubai developed as a result of the discovery of oil in the late 1960s, and by the early 1970s, it had grown to become an important hub for oil corporations. It was also during this period that Dubai saw rapid growth, owing to a significant influx of migrants from the rest of the Middle East, but mostly from Asia, which has continued to this day.
Dubai’s growth was momentarily interrupted in 1990 owing to the Gulf War, but it subsequently rebounded and continued to expand not just as a result of oil and commerce, but also as a result of increased tourism in recent years.
