Imperious South Africa and Australia storm to victory in Dubai as HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series returns – HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series

During the first event of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series season, South Africa swept to an eighth Emirates Dubai 7s victory, setting a terrifying precedent for their HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series opponents. The Blitzboks upset the 2018 Dubai runners-up USA in Saturday’s final with a devastating 42-7 victory to claim their third straight Series gold medal. They had previously defeated Australia and Argentina in the elimination stages and had won all of their Pool matches before that. Neil Powell’s team, which was proclaimed 2021 Series winners in September following victories in Vancouver and Edmonton, ended the tournament with an unprecedented 18th consecutive victory, breaking their previous mark of 16 consecutive victories set in 2008/09.

Australia were as dominating in the women’s Sevens Series, winning every match to be named champions and claim their first Series gold medal since 2018, following a 22-7 victory against Fiji in the championship match.

BLITZBOKS ON ANOTHER LEVEL

Things were still not quite back to normal after last year’s Series was reduced to just two events due to the Covid-19 epidemic, with the event taking place behind closed doors at The Sevens Stadium until fans returned for the second Dubai leg the following week. While New Zealand, the men’s and women’s Series champions in 2020, were unable to play because of Covid-19-related travel issues, Great Britain competed as a joint team before splitting into separate Scotland, Wales, and England national teams following the second Dubai event.

Ronald Brown, who scored a hat-trick and converted five of South Africa’s six tries, was named the HSBC Player of the Final after a thrilling final.

Brown took a move inside a defender to breach the USA line and go under the posts before halftime, and he completed his hat-trick by taking a pass from Pretorius and crossing early in the second half to put the game out of reach for the visitors.

Mike Friday’s team scored a late consolation try through Lucas Lacamp, but South Africa weren’t finished yet as Shaun Williams scored their sixth try to seal a comfortable victory for the visitors.

On his teammate Pretorius’s assist, he said: “JC is a machine, so when he’s outside of me, I hand the ball to him and let him run it up the field, and I’ll support him on the inside.” That is exactly what occurred, and it is for this reason that we crossed the chalk.”

PUMAS BEAT FLYING FIJIANS TO BRONZE

Argentina earned revenge for their Olympic semi-final loss to Fiji by defeating a resurgent Fijian team 19-12 in the bronze medal game to finish third overall in the competition. Even though they only sent two members of their Olympic gold medal-winning squad to Dubai in a lineup that included 11 debutants, the Flying Fijians put in a solid performance, placing second, which was their joint-best finish at this event since coming second in 2016. While Los Pumas stormed out of the blocks with a diving try to take an early lead, Fiji’s Josua Vakurunabili collected a nice offload to cross the whitewash and his 48th international try was converted to give the hosts the advantage.

  • In trying to pass their way out of danger on their own try line, Fiji made a blunder, and Lamas pounced to score his second try of the game.
  • Argentina held on to earn bronze with a last offload assist of their own.
  • However, it was not an easy chore for the Blitzboks, who faced their toughest test of the weekend in the process.
  • When Siviwe Soyizwapi scored his 111th international try to tie Justin Geduld for fourth in his country’s all-time try scoring list after the interval, the top seeds drew away.
  • An upset occurred in the other Cup semi-final when the United States, who had suffered a stunning defeat to Spain the day before, defeated Fiji in a thrilling second half comeback.
  • Nevertheless, Eagles coach Mike Friday’s half-time team talk appeared to have had the desired effect, as his players turned on the style and turned the game on its head with to tries from Lacamp and Matai Leuta, while a fumble in the last play prevented any hope of a late Fijian recovery.

USA SPRING A QUARTER-FINAL SURPRISE

Argentina needed a try in golden-point extra time from 20-year-old rookie Tomas Lizazu to beat Ireland in the first round of the men’s Cup quarter-finals to advance. As a result of tries from German Schulz and Felipe Del Mestre in the first half, Los Pumas raced out to a 12-0 lead. However, Irish playmaker Terry Kennedy increased his Dubai try tally to six by scoring twice either side of the half to level the scores and send the game into extra time, where Lizazu’s lung-busting sprint to the corner sealed a 17-12 victory for Los Pumas.

Soyizwapi scored two of the Blitzboks’ five tries to help them reach a record-equaling 16th straight Series victory, and debutant Tiaan Pretorius’ maiden international try ignited wild celebrations when he scored his first international try.

Baker and Isles scored tries in the second half to put the Americans ahead, and Kevon Williams concluded a brilliant effort with his second try of the match at the death to give them a commanding lead.

An stunning goal by Filipe Sauturaga, who picked up a loose ball in front of his own goal posts and sprinted the length of the field, skipping past two defenders on the way, was the highlight of a thrilling game.

After trailing 21-7 at halftime, France rallied to win 28-26 on a late Nelson Epee try, edging Spain to ninth place in a nail-biting match, while Canada completed a poor campaign with a 22-14 victory against Japan in the 11th place play-off.

AUSTRALIA DOMINATE THE FIELD

Among the best seeds Even though Australia sent a young and inexperienced team to Dubai, any lack of familiarity didn’t show as they defeated Fiji in the women’s final to cap off a really excellent season. Only one of the ten competing women’s teams has ever won the Dubai championship, most recently in 2017. In their five matches, the Australians scored 163 points and surrendered 39, making them the most dominant team in the competition. Demi Hayes needed just three minutes to slide past a defender and burst downfield to give Australia the lead in the final.

  • In the second half, Lily Dick collected a beautiful cross-field kick and raced over in the corner, and John Manenti’s side headed into the interval with a 17-0 advantage when Charlotte Caslick finished off another flowing team play to score their third try of the match.
  • “We’ve been training really hard since Tokyo, and we were extremely dissatisfied with our performance there,” HSBC Player of the Final Charlotte Caslick remarked after the tournament.
  • Russia.
  • Chloe Pelle came off the bench to score a brace of her own, either side of a show-and-go effort from Valenthine Lothoz, as France cruised to their first-ever bronze medal at the Dubai International Sports Festival.

BRAZIL REACH NEW HEIGHTS

Australia opened the day by extending their unbeaten start in Pool A with a 38-5 victory against Brazil, but the Brazilians answered with a historic 12-10 victory over the United States, who had previously defeated Spain 17-12 in the same pool. On day one, Brazil recorded their first-ever victory against the United States, capping up a strong Pool stage showing that included victories over Spain and a tight loss to France in their previous matches. France’s finest performance yet helped them finish second in Pool B, ahead of Brazil in third and the United States in fourth, despite a 24-22 loss to Australia.

Defeating Great Britain 28-5 in their last Pool B match, Fiji put on a stunning performance to take first place from the Brits.

Fiji, Russia, and the United Kingdom all finished with 10 points after each winning three games in a competitive Pool, however they finished in that order based on points differential between them.

It will be back in action next weekend, this time at The Sevens in Dubai, for the second round of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series this season.

South Africa, Australia win again at Dubai Sevens while young Canada teams struggle

Due to pandemic-related travel concerns, the New Zealand men’s and women’s teams, as well as the Samoan men’s team, were unable to compete in the two back-to-back Dubai tournaments. Canada struggled in yet another challenging competition, with the ladies finishing ninth and the men placing 12th. The Canadian ladies finished in eighth place last week, while the men finished in eleventh. The men’s final on Saturday was a nail-biter, as both teams came into the final unblemished throughout the tournament.

  1. After breaking a tackle to give the Blitzboks the lead in the 14th minute, the team needed some last-minute defense to hold on to their advantage, which they did.
  2. South Africa advanced to the finals after defeating Kenya 31-19 and France 19-12 on Saturday.
  3. Argentina earned the bronze medal in the men’s competition on Saturday, defeating France 38-21 to become the first country to win consecutive medals since 2018.
  4. France’s ladies won the bronze medal for the second time in a row with a 28-5 victory over Russia.
  5. During substantial staff turnover following the Tokyo Olympics, where the men finished eighth and the women ninth, Canada fielded inexperienced teams in Dubai.
  6. In the wake of defeats to the United States, Australia, and Kenya on Day 1, the Canadian men found themselves in the position of having to face Olympic champion Fiji to open play on Sunday.
  7. The Canadians were defeated by Fiji, 33-19, with tries from Josiah Morra, Jarvis Dashkewytch, and Elias Ergas in a losing effort.
  8. When the two teams faced last week in the same match, the Canadians came out on top 22-14.
  9. On Saturday, they were edged out 14-12 by Russia before rallying to defeat Brazil 17-12 the next day.
  10. The Canadian men finished 11th in the rankings after two tournaments after going 1-9-0, while the Canadian women finished 10th in the standings after going 2-8-0.

Blitzboks Face Kenya In Dubai Sevens II Cup Quarters Final – The Daily Rugby

Photo courtesy of The Daily Rugby. It was a successful opening day for the Blitzboks, who defeated Great Britain 21-7 in the last pool match to finish first and advance to the quarterfinals of the Dubai SevensII tournament. South Africa will play Kenya in their quarterfinal matchup on Saturday as the other African side ended as the best third-placed team, allowing them to go into the final round of the World Cup on home soil. Nonetheless, following a day in which they defeated Japan 48-0 and Ireland 21-12 in their previous two pool games, the final game was substantially more physical, but was won by and by the overwhelming breakdown ability of the Blitzboks (South Africa).

  • It was a difficult day at [email protected], and tomorrow will be much tougher.
  • Another first-half attempt came from Shilton van Wyk before Great Britain responded with a late chance by Alex Davis just before the break siren.
  • Among the biggest surprises of the day was the fact that Olympic champions Fiji did not advance to the quarterfinals after suffering a shocking 33-19 defeat to Spain in the first round.
  • THE CUP QUARTERFINALS WILL BE PLAYED ON SATURDAY (ALL TIMES CAT, GMT+2):7:44am Australia v Ireland (all times CAT, GMT+2) Argentina vs.

Unbeaten Blitzboks down Great Britain, set to face Kenya in Cup quarter-final

With Zain Davids, Shilton van Wyk and Ronald Brown attempting three tries each, the South Africans scored three tries in total, with Branco Du Preez and Ronald Brown converting two of them. During this time, the British responded with a single effort through Alex Davis, with Robbie Fergusson switching over the attempt to succeed. The Springboks Sevens have won their twentieth consecutive match in the World Rugby Sevens Series as a result of their victory. Prior to Friday’s match, the Blitzboks had won both of their Pool A games, defeating Japan (46-0) and Ireland (28-0).

The South Africans will face Kenya in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Saturday at 08:50 local time.

“It’s possible that was due to the sort of week we had at the conclusion of last week, with the groups coming out to throw everything at you,” Powell speculated.

They are the favorites to win the tournament again this week’s end of the week.

Australia women win Dubai Sevens again

Despite being beaten in the final of the Dubai Sevens competition by their male counterparts, Australia’s excellent women’s rugby sevens team has won the championship for the second time in a row in consecutive weeks.

Key points:

  • Australian women’s rugby sevens team has won back-to-back titles after defeating Fiji in two consecutive finals in a span of less than a week. During the final, Australia’s men’s team was defeated by South Africa with a score of 10-07. As a result of the cancellations of the New Zealand and Australia legs, the following two tournaments will instead be held in Spain in January of 2019.

After a decisive 15-5 victory against Fiji in the final on Saturday, the Australian women continued their strong and unbeaten run over the previous two weeks to win their second straight World Championship championship. They had previously defeated Fiji 15-5 in the semifinals. The Australian men, who had also advanced to the finals unbroken, were left disappointed after coming so near to stopping the extraordinary winning streak of South Africa’s superb “Blitzboks,” only to lose 10-7 in the end.

  • Following a heavy sin-binning of Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea for deliberate knock-on in the second half of the second half, Demi Hayes’ side was reduced to six with four minutes left in the game.
  • It was because of Caslick’s incredible workrate that the Australians were able to gain a key late turnover, easing their road to their first back-to-back World Series wins in over four years.
  • And, over the course of five matches played over two days, the Australians’ domination had been evident as they amassed 168 points, which included 26 tries, six of which came from Nathan, who scored in every match, and another half-dozen from Caslick, who also scored in every contest.
  • That’s precisely how we intended to start this series, and given the fact that it’s the first time a series has been played back-to-back in Dubai, we’re beyond excited “Hayes expressed himself.
  • After the COVID-19 epidemic prompted the cancellation of the scheduled World Series tournament event in South Africa, the Australians found themselves in a comfortable hunting field in the UAE capital, which hosted two tournaments over the course of two weeks.
  • No one came closer than the Australians, who were still hammering away for a winning score in the dying seconds of the final round.
  • However, JC Pretorius’ spectacular display of skill allowed him to run over for the deciding touchdown in the second half, making the “Blitzboks” the first team to win three consecutive Dubai titles since New Zealand in 2002.

The next legs of the sevens global series would ordinarily have taken place in New Zealand and Australia, but both events have been postponed and will be replaced by two tournaments in Spain in January. AAPPosted, updated

Watch: Bizarre moment player held-up at Dubai Sevens

During this bizarre scenario between the Blitzboks and Japan, the clock began to tick down. A general image of the audience during the Dubai Sevens tournament (Getty Images) Watch this bizarre moment when a player is held up in the Dubai Sevens tournament. In the 15s game, we are accustomed to seeing defenders perform the ‘choke tackle,’ which is the skill of lifting a tackled player off the ground and forming a maul in the hopes of forcing a turnover. However, it was a pleasant surprise to see a player hold up in sevens.

  • This is something you’ve *never* seen before in Sevens.
  • HSBC7s|
  • Because none of Davids’ Blitzboks teammates participated in the maul, the referee was compelled to declare that “this is not a maul.” Normally, we would see a changeover in the 15s, but this is the World Series for Sevens.
  • The Japanese players had to pull the ball from of his hands or knock him to the ground.
  • None of this occurred, and as a result, we were at a standstill.
  • “You’ve never seen something like this before in sevens,” says World Rugby on their official Twitter account.

South Africa, Australia win again at Dubai Sevens while young Canada teams struggle

We were unable to participate in the two back-to-back Dubai events because of travel concerns associated with the pandemic that affected the New Zealand men’s and women’s teams, as well as the Samoan men. Canada struggled in yet another event, with the ladies placing eighth and the men finishing twelveth. Also last week, the Canadian ladies finished in eighth position, with the men in eleventh place. It was a nail-biter in Saturday’s men’s final, as both teams entered the final unblemished. Siviwe Soyizwapi’s score put South Africa ahead in the opening minute of the match, but the Springboks trailed 7-5 at halftime thanks to a converted try by Corey Toole.

However, six-foot-two Solomone Vosaicake was unable to hold on to Dietrich Roache’s low off-load near the South African try-line in the final seconds of the contest.

Australia trounced both Ireland and Argentina, winning 24-12 and 40-0, respectively.

Fiji fell to the Pumas 19-12 in the bronze medal game played last week.

After a 40-0 shutout against the Russians in the third-place game last weekend, the French are in first position.

Eight of the Canadian women were making their World Series debuts in Dubai, whilst eight members of the Canadian men’s squad had competed in two or fewer World Series events, including four debutantes, when they came in Dubai.

For the second time in team history, the Pacific Islanders failed to advance to the Cup quarterfinals on Friday.

Nicholas Allen and Brock Webster each scored tries as Canada went on to lose 21-12 to Japan in the 11th-place playoff.

During the first day of competition, the Canadian ladies were defeated by Australia 52-0 and Spain 12-10.

Ireland won the seventh-place playoff 26-12, ending the competition with tries from Asia Hogan-Rochester and Chloe Daniels in a losing cause for the United States of America.

Beginning on January 21, a men’s and women’s event in Malaga, Spain, will serve as the World Series’ return date for the year. — It was published for the first time on December 4, 2021, in The Canadian Press. Canada’s National Publications
