We recently investigated what is causing the Middle East to become a new center for expat attorneys. Philippa English graciously consented to be a part of this series and shared her thoughts on her relocation from London to Dubai with the rest of us. Philippa is a 3PQE business lawyer who educated in the United Kingdom before deciding to go to the United States after being admitted to the bar.
Q.
I chose law because of the opportunities it provides for travel and involvement in international work, which was one of the main reasons I decided to pursue it.
That was one of the things that drew me to them, along with the fact that there were several options to do secondments overseas.
It was around this period that I realized I wanted to continue my international endeavors and discover what else was out there for me.
Which nations did you look at, and why did you choose them?
Because Australia was too far away for a permanent position at the time, I looked into alternative options in traditional expat locations such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Dubai.
What I desired was to be able to travel overseas and finally return to London without being placed in a precarious financial situation.
I wanted to make certain that, no matter where I went, the experience I gained would be just as meaningful and enjoyable as if I were sitting in the London office, so I spent a lot of time researching and planning.
There were no prospects available in the nations where I desired to relocate, unfortunately.

Since I have been here for three years, I can see how it has improved my career, since I now have a lot more diverse skill set than I would have had if I had worked in a specialised capacity for a huge team in another city.

It’s a story that’s been told before.
As soon as you are transported to the United Arab Emirates, every company will provide you with lodging for the first two to four weeks, which is really convenient.
I did have acquaintances in the UAE when I first came, but none of them were in the country or working in my field when I arrived.
People are really friendly, and when they extend an invitation to lunch, they really mean it!
When you work with people that are warm and approachable, it may really be beneficial, especially when you are working on fresh material that you have never seen before.
What are the most noticeable alterations you have noticed in your day-to-day activities?
The commute is really amazing!
Because it is a tiny nation with a large number of expats, there is a thriving social scene, which allows you to leave work at 9pm and still meet up with friends for drinks or a late supper and still get home at a fair hour the following day.
How has your relocation to the United Arab Emirates impacted your long-term professional prospects?
There are also other companies where you don’t get that kind of exposure, which seems like a pity because it makes being in the Middle East a more immersive experience.
Of course, that would provide me with a fantastic way back to the United Kingdom or to other international law countries.
To be honest, I believe moving to the UAE has been a beneficial decision because of the number of employment opportunities available to you as a NQ, which has been far more than if I had not relocated.
So far, it’s been a fantastic experience.
What are some of your favorite aspects of living in a foreign country?
Because Dubai is located in the geographic center of the world, you can go to everywhere in the world, including Africa, Europe, and South-East Asia.
The lifestyle in the UAE is amazing; I enjoy the warm temperature in the summer months a little less than I do in the winter, but the climate is fantastic.

We have the new Opera House, which is fantastic, and a lot of money is being invested in making the United Arab Emirates a destination with everything.
However, this is not the type of nation in which you should anticipate such.
Is there anything you would do differently in a similar situation?
I had absolutely no clue what I was doing, and looking back, I think it would have been beneficial to have spoken to someone about it.
You have to go through the process of getting a phone and setting up a bank account, which is not always easy.
It would not have impacted the timeline of the procedure, but it would have made me a little more conscious of it and less anxious during the process.
I hadn’t considered how expensive this would be, so I believe doing my research would have been beneficial.
It will only make the first six months of the shift lot more manageable.
Do you have any intentions to relocate to another country in the near future?
If the perfect chance presented itself in the future, I would not hesitate to travel to a new nation and experience its culture and traditions.
At the moment, I am in love with the United Arab Emirates and have no intention of leaving.
What recommendations would you provide to someone who is considering a professional relocation to the United Arab Emirates?
A large number of people, including myself, were employed as particular lawyers at certain levels to perform specified tasks.
Although this is a positive development, it is something you should be aware of.
I adore the United Arab Emirates, and I have many friends and a vibrant social life here.
This is, of course, the case in every new expat city that you travel to.
Because many expats do not have relatives in the country, forming a close group of friends is essential.

It is a well-known hangout for me.
What is your favorite recreational activity?
Spending time with my friends on Saturday and Sunday nights.
What are your plans for the weekend?
The city of Dubai is not just devoted to dining and drinking.
A lot of breakfasts are served, which is great fun, but you spend the next day trying to make up for it by participating in water sports or going to the gym.
