LATEST UPDATE: NOVEMBER 2020 During a recent talk with an American acquaintance, I discovered that he had never heard of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), believed Dubai was the capital of Saudi Arabia, and believed that their identity was Muslim. Yes, this is true! Where can I even begin?! I attempted to give him the whole tale, but it ended up being a little too long-winded. Since the United Arab Emirates is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination, I assumed the uncertainty would have subsided, but it appears that is not the case at all!
Is it one of the world’s 197 countries, or is it something else?
Allow me to set the record straight:
What is the UAE:
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is an acronym for the country of the same name. In the United Arab Emirates, there are seven smaller ‘Emirates,’ which are akin to nations in their own right. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are two of the seven states on the list. The seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates are as follows:
- Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Fujairah, Ras al Khaimah, and Umm al Qaiwain are all cities in the United Arab Emirates.

There are only so many things that can be done while lying on a Thai beach, so once you’ve checked that box, it’s time to put yourself through some serious challenges. There are no tourist buses in the Middle East, no hostels full of college students, and you are truly on the road in this region. And Dubai is an excellent starting location for such an endeavor. This part of the UAE is far more liberal (in the Western sense) than much of the rest of the country, and it serves as an excellent introduction before you embark on excursions to Syria or Iraq, such as the ones I took my readers on (read about them on those links, they were fantastic trips!).

As previously stated, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates is really Abu Dhabi rather than Dubai, however Dubai is more well-known. Many people mistakenly believe it to be the capital! As a result, Dubai is a city within the emirate of Dubai, and Abu Dhabi is a city within the emirate of Abu Dhabi, which is a very big emirate. Although Abu Dhabi is the bigger of the two Emirate capitals, they are not both considered capital cities because they are not independent countries.

An Emirate is a portion of land that is controlled by an Emir; however, in the United Arab Emirates, the term Emir is not used. They refer to themselves as Sheikhs or Rulers. The term “Emir” refers to a male Islamic leader who holds this position. In Arabic, the word emir is derived from the words commander and prince.
Does Dubai have a capital city?
So Dubai is the capital and largest city of the Emirate of Dubai, whereas Hatta is another town that is a part of Dubai as an Emirate. Another is Jebel Ali, which also happens to be the location of one of the major ports in the Middle East. Dubai does not have a capital city because it is not a nation, as is the case with most other cities. Hatta is a magnificent town surrounded by natural beauty, and it is located on the border with Oman. It is surrounded by a stunning lake and mountain range.

Is Dubai acapitalistcountry?
Another question that is frequently asked is whether or not Dubai is a communist nation. As a result, Dubai is rather unique in that it still possesses a monarchy as its controlling authority. The country is neither communist nor socialist; rather, it is a capitalist society. Anyone who wants to start a business in Dubai can do so. Previously, you were required to have a local partner in order to conduct business on the mainland, but the legislation has changed. It does offer excellent social services for its citizens (not residents, sorry!) such as providing land and houses to newlyweds and those who have children.
Education in public schools is also provided at no cost to citizens, or “locals,” as they are referred as in Dubai.
They also benefit from lower electricity bills and other cost savings as a result of their Emirati citizenship. The great majority of Emirati individuals are employed by the government; however, the UAE is attempting to change this through the “Emiratization” of the private sector (Emiratization).
Dubai is which continent?
Asia is the continent in which it is located. Because Asia is such a varied continent, it is sometimes grouped along with its subcontinent, which is known as the Middle East. The Middle East is split into two major regions: the “Sham,” sometimes known as the Levant in English, and the Arabian Peninsula. Dubai is a city in the United Arab Emirates on the Arabian Gulf. Because of the previous Ottoman Empire, this is commonly referred to as the Persian Gulf when it is not in the Gulf itself. If you are in Dubai or anyplace else on the Arabian Peninsula, though, you will hear it referred to as the Arabian Gulf.
Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Palestine, Jordan, Israel, and Iran are also considered to be part of the Middle East.
Middle East, North Africa, and the Middle East are commonly abbreviated as MENA.
Is Dubai in Saudi Arabia?
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a completely separate country with a distinct ruling family and a distinct set of laws. Saudi Arabia is directly across the border from the United Arab Emirates. In the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, there is a border with Saudi Arabia that connects the two countries. The travel from Dubai to the Saudi border would take around 4 and a half hours. The reason why Dubai is frequently mistaken with Saudi Arabia is a mystery to me. They’re very different countries, but to the West, they’re both very wealthy Arab countries with cultures that are very similar to one another.

Dubai is located in the Arabian Peninsula, in the middle of the country of the United Arab Emirates, in the middle of the country. The Gulf Sea runs along the whole length of Dubai’s major metropolitan area. As a result, it is a great beach destination. In the Middle East, it has borders with both Oman and Saudi Arabia. Because of the desert environment, it is sunny for the most of the time throughout the year.
