There are only so many things that can be done while lying on a Thai beach, so once you’ve checked that box, it’s time to put yourself through some serious challenges. There are no tourist buses in the Middle East, no hostels full of college students, and you are truly on the road in this region. And Dubai is an excellent starting location for such an endeavor. This part of the UAE is far more liberal (in the Western sense) than much of the rest of the country, and it serves as an excellent introduction before you embark on excursions to Syria or Iraq, such as the ones I took my readers on (read about them on those links, they were fantastic trips!).

However, the UAE is not inexpensive, so don’t plan on staying for too long.

It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

7.Re: Is English going to be sufficient? 9 years ago today When it comes to meeting Emiratis (or individuals from other Arab/GCC nations), shopping malls are the most common meeting venue. We discovered that our extremely modest understanding of Arabic was always welcomed by the people around us. I was once asked where Debenhams was located at Mall of the Emirates by a gentleman dressed in Arabic attire (I have no clue if he was Emirati, Saudi, or of another country). I pointed it out to him because it was just around 20 meters away.

He grinned, said “Shukran” (thank you), and extended his hand to shake mine.

“Mafimushkilah” (phonetically spelt, and which typically means “no trouble” or “no concerns”) was spoken by Mrs.

Hnd, and she received a pretty broad smile in reply; he said “shukran” and bowed his head slightly in acknowledgement. It’s not a bad idea to practice your rudimentary Arabic with people who are likely to comprehend what you’re saying. In general, people are grateful for your efforts.

Languages

Despite the fact that Arabic is the official language of the United Arab Emirates, English is the most widely spoken language in Dubai. In addition to many other languages, you will discover a large number of expats who speak Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Tagalog, Persian, Chinese, and Malayalam, among many others. Arabic is the official language of communication in Dubai, and it is used for both written and oral communication. Languages used in government offices and activities include Arabic, which is also the language in which regulations and legislation are issued.

When visiting Dubai, it is possible to communicate just in English; but, if you are prepared to learn Arabic, you will most likely be better welcomed by the Emiratis.

Non-Arabic languages spoken in Dubai

When it comes to business, trade, and tourism in Dubai, English is by far the most frequently spoken language in the country. Approximately 75% of Dubai’s population is made up of expats, the majority of whom are fluent in English and/or their original language. There are many different nationalities working in Dubai, therefore it is probable that you will be able to locate someone who speaks your native language. If you are fluent in a South Asian language (for example, Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Bengali, or Tamil), you will have the opportunity to put your skills to the test while in Dubai.

In the course of talks for the Dubai Strategic Plan for 2015, the issue of the rising number of English speakers was brought up for consideration.
