Middle East – Etiquette of Addressing Royals

To follow up on my previous piece, Doing Business in the Middle East, I’d like to provide a few more considerations to keep in mind when doing business or socializing with members of the royal family in the Middle East. It is critical to be aware of the procedure that must be followed while engaging with members of the royal family in this extensive caste system. In Doha, Qatar, at the welcoming reception for Prince Charles, Sheikha Mayassa Al Thani, the daughter of the Amir, “the father,” and Sheikha Moza of Qatar gathered at the Islamic Museum for a photo opportunity.

  • When conducting business in the region, it is critical to understand the hierarchical structure.
  • Take, for example, the House of Saud, which is the governing dynasty of Saudi Arabia, which has thousands of descendants.
  • This may be pretty difficult and takes some time to comprehend – not to mention the time it takes to learn how to pronounce each name correctly.
  • It doesn’t matter where you stand on the caste system; respect and the right usage of terminology are beneficial to business.
  • When addressing a Prince, he is addressed as “Your Royal Highness,” followed by his title and then his name.
  • An heir apparent or male line descendant of a monarch is believed to be the Prince or Princess.
  • It is not usually the case that the husband of a princess is a prince.

There are certain exceptions, but in general, you can tell the difference between those who are royal and those who are not royal in Middle Eastern Royalty by the letter that precedes their name: A is for royal, and B is for non-royal.

stands for His Highness, which means he is a royal.

stands for His Excellency, which means that he is or has been a prominent government official (like an ambassador or government minister, though often they can also be royals).

“Your Excellency,” says an ambassador.

If the sheikh is not a government official, ambassador, or royal, he is addressed as “Sheikh” followed by his or her name.

or H.E., then that would come before the name “Sheikh.” If the sheikha is not a government official, ambassador, or princess, she will be addressed as “Sheikha” followed by her given name.

If her spouse is an H.E., this does not transfer over to her as well.

For example, “Princess Lalla.of Morocco” would be a proper name.

“The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques” is how he is referred to. In order to do business successfully in this region, it is important to conduct preliminary study and to constantly show respect for the local culture and historical heritage. The whole thing is actually extremely intriguing.

An Introduction to Dubai’s Royal Family

His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of Dubai | courtesy of the Chilean government via Flickr The Al Maktoum family is the royal and reigning family of Dubai, and it is led by His Royal Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the ruler of the city-state. The future king of the United Kingdom, Prince William, started on his first official visit to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, where he will showcase his commitment to animal conservation and climate change. The visit by Prince William is a watershed moment in the history of ties between the United Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates, a Gulf Arab nation aligned with the West and dominated by hereditary rulers. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the son of Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, is set to meet with the prince on his visit to the United Arab Emirates.

  1. The UAE was visited for the first time by Queen Elizabeth II as queen in 1979, and Prince Charles’ latest visit was in 2016.
  2. According to the British Business Group in Dubai and Northern Emirates, there are more than 100,000 British people residing in the United Arab Emirates and more than 6,000 British enterprises working in the country.
  3. Prince William is set to pay a visit to the United Kingdom pavilion and explore the $7 billion grounds of the Expo site, where he will speak with young Emiratis, government officials, and environmentalists about the significance of conservation initiatives.
  4. Prince William, who is traveling without his wife, Catherine, will also use his time in Dubai to bring attention to The Earthshot Prize, which is being sponsored by the United Arab Emirates.
  5. The award ceremony for this year will be place in the United States of America.
  6. One of the award’s original financing partners is Dubai-based global ports operator DP World, which is working in cooperation with Dubai Expo 2020 to establish the prize.
  7. To kick off his trip of the United Arab Emirates, he paid a visit to Abu Dhabi’s Jubail Mangrove Park, where he learned more about the emirate’s local conservation initiatives.

The baton, which carries a message from Queen Elizabeth, will travel through all 72 countries and territories in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

From the standpoint of a royal, and as the future of the United Kingdom’s monarchy, I believe there is considerable interest in his candidacy for the throne.

Since the early 18th Century, the lands of the United Arab Emirates have piqued the interest of the British, who saw them as part of a key Persian Gulf commerce route with connections to India and other British colonial holdings.

As a result of oil money, Abu Dhabi’s and Dubai’s humid coastal areas have been swiftly transformed into a skyscraper-studded city with an inexhaustible supply of five-star hotels.

But British nationals have primarily benefited from the greater wages, milder winters, reduced taxes, and luxurious living circumstances that Western expats in the Gulf have been able to take advantage of.

Throughout Dubai, British accents predominate on English-language radio broadcasts, and British pub culture is popular among locals.

Ruler of Dubai ordered to pay record $730M to ex-wife and their kids

In the most expensive divorce settlement in British history, the ruler of Dubai was ordered to pay more than $730 million to his ex-wife, a princess, and their children, according to a British court. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, 72, was ordered in London’s High Court to pay the staggering sum to his sixth wife, Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein — who had become accustomed to “limitless” funding before fleeing their marriage in 2019 after cheating with a bodyguard who blackmailed her. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum was born in the United Arab Emirates and raised in the United Kingdom.

  1. Furthermore, he was ordered to arrange a bank guarantee in the amount of $385 million to cover future payments for the children, who reside with their mother in a house near London’s Kensington Palace that is valued more than $115 million.
  2. Al-Maktoum (right) was previously accused of kidnapping two of his daughters from a previous marriage.
  3. PA Images courtesy of Getty Images In fact, she was given approval for more than $2.5 million to renovate her kitchen, which included the installation of a pizza oven, despite the fact that the estate had only recently undergone a nearly $120 million renovation.
  4. “The true value of money is significantly different from the value of money to any average mortal interested in this case or any petitioner who ordinarily comes before this court,” Cusworth explained.
  5. Haya, together with her husband and two children, initially requested $1.85 billion in compensation.
  6. “Most importantly in this regard, and absolutely uniquely, the main threat they face is from themselves, not from outside sources,” the judge said of the sheikh, who is also vice president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.
  7. Al-Maktoum, a prominent racehorse breeder, was found to have abducted and tortured two of his children from a previous marriage, as well as hacked the phones of Haya and her attorneys, according to two separate UK High Court judgements.

Earlier this year, the princess’ current director of security — who was allowed total anonymity in order to testify — expressed concern about “a major possibility of her being killed or wounded, as well as the children being taken.” “I am completely confident that this indicates that.

“There can be no compromise in this area,” the judge said as he allowed the purchase of a fleet of armored vehicles worth millions of dollars, as well as the construction of special parking lots for them.

“I genuinely want to be free, and I sincerely want them to be free,” Haya said in her statement to the court.

According to the court testimony, that bodyguard — who was recognized in court — then blackmailed her and other members of the security team, leaving the princess so terrified that she paid them over $9 million to conceal the affair.

Sheikh Mohammed died in the following year.

“I genuinely want to be free, and I sincerely want them to be free,” she told the judge in her opening statement.

Earlier this year, Haya and her attorney, Baroness Fiona Shackleton, were seen outside court.

According to the ruling, she had an annual budget of around $110 million for her household in Dubai, plus an additional $12 million in spending money.

According to Dyer, the judgement on Tuesday was “definitely the greatest financial remedy award ever ordered and, I believe, the largest financial remedy award ever issued by a family court.” An official spokesperson for Sheikh Mohammed claimed in a statement that the monarch “has always made certain that his children are well taken care of.” “The court has finally reached a decision on the finances, and he has made it clear that he will not be commenting further.” While Haya’s blackmailing boyfriend was only named as “Mr.

D” in court, he was characterized as a married former British soldier who had been assigned to be her personal protection officer, according to the Times of London.
