Half Terms

Half terms in Terms 1 and 2 have been reintroduced in calendars as a result of negotiations between schools and the KHDA to extend the academic year beyond the dates set forth in the “new calendar.” The first rule of the KHDA’s new standards said that all private schools in Dubai must adhere to the dates provided; however, there appears to have been some wiggle space when it comes to the conclusion of the school year.

The start and finish dates of all terms have remained consistent with the KHDA’s requirements in calendars provided out to parents by top UK curriculum schools, although the end of the academic year has been extended to July 7th, in accordance with the guidelines.

Schools previously have the choice to take five days off during the year, according to the KHDA’s standards, which may be “spread or combined throughout the year, or to prolong Spring break.” As a result of the five flexible days and the one-week extension of the school year, schools have been allowed to restore two half terms in their authorized calendars, according to the Kentucky Department of Education.

According to the British schools in Dubai that we have spoken to, the following half terms will be used in the winter and spring terms respectively.

  • Winter semester runs from Sunday, October 18th, through Thursday, October 22nd. Spring term runs from Sunday, February 14th, through Thursday, February 18th.

The staff development week, which was formerly held during the summer term and allowed for a half term earlier in the year, has been shifted to the summer term to accommodate more students. During the week, children will be attending school. During the summer semester, there is no half-term break to take advantage of. It was decided by the KHDA to alter the academic calendar for the 2020/21 academic year in order to “assure that all private schools in Dubai operate on a more consistent school year.” The updated calendar covers a minimum of 182 school days and “satisfies the academic and test requirements of each curriculum,” according to the Department of Education.

  1. There are certain dates that private schools in Dubai must adhere to that are defined in the academic calendar. It is required that the academic year have a minimum of 182 school days. Unless otherwise provided in the calendar, the academic year shall not finish before the given date. No changes may be made to the start dates of the Spring and Winter holidays. In addition, schools have the option to take five days off throughout the academic year – which can be dispersed or combined throughout the year – or to prolong Spring break. These five days, on the other hand, cannot be utilized to prolong either the Winter or Summer holidays. The previous academic year, schools were allowed to set aside eight days to be used for training or CPD (continuous professional development) (student-free days). This option is no longer accessible
  2. Nonetheless, The government of the United Arab Emirates will publish the specific dates of public holidays in the coming weeks. These holidays can be conveyed to parents on a provisional basis, but they must not be confirmed until they have been formally announced by the United Arab Emirates government. In the calendar that is presented for approval, schools should not include any public holidays. Only once their academic calendar has been authorized by the KHDA may schools communicate it with the rest of their community. All schools are expected to adhere to these policies and procedures. In accordance with Executive Council Resolution No.(2) of 2017, Regulation Private Schools in the Emirate of Dubai, failure to comply will result in additional action.

An overview of school holidays in the UAE

According to the United Arab Emirates Ministry of Education, the minimum number of school days each year (at least 182 teaching days) as well as the authorized school calendar for the year are determined by the Ministry. During the academic year, which runs from late August to the end of June, there are two brief breaks to break up the monotony. Almost all schools in the United Arab Emirates, including private and foreign institutions, are obliged to adhere to certain dates and procedures.

Yas Waterworld is one of the many wonderful family attractions in the United Arab Emirates. In the United Arab Emirates, there are three major school holidays, which are as follows:

  • Winter vacation lasts two and a half weeks, from the middle of December to the beginning of January. Spring vacation is three weeks in duration from late March to early April (foreign schools may divide this into two-week breaks and one-week breaks according on their schedule)
  • In the summer, no more than 8.2 weeks between late June and early September are permitted.

In addition to these breaks, children in the United Arab Emirates are given 14 days off for public holidays throughout the calendar year. New Year’s Day, both the Gregorian and Islamic New Years, Eid al-Fitr, and the United Arab Emirates’ National Day are among them. It’s possible that your child will be able to take advantage of additional half-term holidays if they attend one of the numerous foreign schools in the country. Children in the United Arab Emirates are commemorating UAE National Day.

It’s important to remember, though, that a few companies will be closed at this period.

Keep in mind that the day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of a crescent moon, thus the actual date of the celebration can be a couple of days off from the official date.

School holiday dates in the UAE 2021–2022

  • Winter break is scheduled for December 12–30, 2021
  • Spring break is scheduled for March 27–April 14, 2022
  • And summer break is scheduled for late June–August 28, 2022.

Inquire with your school to learn about the particular dates for the upcoming academic year.

School holiday dates in the UAE 2022-23

  • Winter vacation will run from December 11, 2022, until January 1, 2023. Spring vacation will be held from March 26th to April 13th, 2023. Summer vacation will be from late June to late August in 2023.

All dates are subject to change without notice.

Additional holidays and days off

In addition to noting the above-mentioned term dates, it’s a good idea to keep track of the following extra dates:

  • New Year’s Day is January 1st
  • Eid Al-Fitr is observed between May 1st and May 5th (depending on when the crescent moon is visible)
  • Arafah day and Eid Al-Adha are observed between July 8th and 11th
  • Hijri New Year (Islamic New Year) is observed on July 30th
  • Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday is October 8th

Childcare during school holidays in the UAE

Nurseries are not authorized to operate during national holidays in the United Arab Emirates; therefore, it is doubtful that you will be at your place of employment on these days. Having said that, considering the UAE offers quite extended vacation breaks, you may be seeking for activities to keep your children engaged throughout this time. Here are a few alternatives:

  • Nursery vacation camps: During the school holidays, several private nurseries provide a holiday camp for at least a portion of the day for their children. If your child attends a nursery or kindergarten in the United Arab Emirates, inquire with them about the programs they provide. Sports camps: If you want to ensure that your children get some physical activity during the holidays, there are a variety of choices available. Water-loving children would like DuDive diving vacation camp andWaves Academy, which both provide rigorous swimming instruction. Infinite Sports, on the other hand, provides multi-activity camps for children who want to stay dry. Nannies and childminders: Nannies and childminders are in high demand in the UAE, but it’s crucial to work with a trustworthy service and to be clear about your expectations. Alternatively, you might call a child-minding business such as CloudNine Kids, which provides babysitting services as well as childcare training in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

According to the Dubai Education Regulatory Authority, the new working week for private schools in the emirate will be Monday through Friday. It was specifically stated in a fast guide issued on the Knowledge and Human Development Authority’s social media on Wednesday that the new Saturday-Sunday weekend will apply to teachers and all other personnel working in private schools. According to the statement, students and faculty at Dubai’s private schools will be dismissed at noon on Friday as part of the transition from a five-day week to four and a half days starting on January 3.

Private schools in Sharjah will be able to extend the academic year by a week or adjust the daily hours in order to accommodate the transition to the new working week, according to the government.

For your convenience, the following are three important guidelines for private schools in Dubai:

When will school finish on Friday?

Although the school day cannot end later than 12pm on Friday, kids are permitted to be released before noon.

Do the rules apply to pupils only?

Teachers and other employees will be affected by the changes to the working week. Students and faculty in private schools are covered by the Saturday-Sunday weekend and the Friday 12pm closing.

Can schools extend hours during the week?

After discussing with parents, the regulator stated that schools might begin and end the learning day earlier or later than scheduled. Private schools are permitted to alter daily schedules in order to accommodate their respective curricula, but they must notify the KHDA of any changes to operation hours.
