Three-day break to start December as UAE public holidays approved for 2019 and 2020
Workers may look forward to a three-day vacation to commemorate Commemoration Day and National Day, according to a decision by the UAE Cabinet to approve a schedule of public holidays for the balance of the year and for the next year. As a result of the agreed-upon holiday dates – which will apply to both private and public sector employees – local residents will enjoy a seamless three-day break to kick off December, beginning with Commemoration Day on Sunday, December 1, and continuing with two days dedicated to the country’s 48th National Day celebrations on December 2 and 3.
In the past, workers in all sectors were expected to be awarded a day off on Saturday, November 30 in observance of Commemoration Day before returning to work for one day on December 1 in preparation for the two-day National Day vacation, which will continue in effect this year.
The public sector used to have more vacation days than the private sector, but that has changed.

Fixed and Islamic Holidays
UAE holidays may be divided into two categories: those that are established in the normal Gregorian calendar (Western calendar), and Islamic holidays that are observed according to the Hijri calendar (Jordan calendar) (Islamic calendar). A solar calendar, the Gregorian calendar has 365 days (366 in a leap year), whereas the Hijri calendar has 354 days and as a lunar calendar, the Julian calendar has 365 days. As a result, Islamic festivals will be moved 11 or 12 days every year in relation to the Gregorian calendar.
The exact dates of Islamic holidays are determined by the sighting of the crescent moon and are only announced by the UAE government a day or two before they begin to be observed.
Due to the fact that the Hijri calendar is shorter than the Gregorian calendar, it is feasible for an Islamic festival to be celebrated twice during a calendar year in the western calendar. An employee’s yearly leave will not be affected by a public holiday, sometimes known as a bank holiday.
Weekends and the UAE Weekend Change 2022

Ramadan

Christmas Day
In Dubai and the United Arab Emirates, Christmas Day is not observed as a public holiday. June 3/4 to June 6/7 – Eid Al Fitr
Eid Al Fitr is an Arabic word that roughly translates as “holiday of breaking the fast.” The event is a celebration that commemorates the completion of the Islamic month of Ramadan (which is forecast to be on June 3 or 4). Residents will have four to five days off after the date has been established, depending on when it occurs during the week. Eid Al Fitr begins naturally on the first day of Shawwal after the last day of Ramadan, which is the last day of the Islamic month of Ramadan.
In 2019, the UAE Cabinet said that the holidays will begin on Ramadan 29, which might fall on June 3 (Monday) or 4 (Tuesday), with the exact day to be determined closer to the date depending on moon sightings. In previous years, the UAE Cabinet indicated that the vacations would begin on Ramadan 29.
August 10 – Arafat Day

Prior to Allah sending his angel, Jibra’il, to notify Ibrahim that he has already accepted the sacrifice from his heart, Ismail is delighted to cooperate. They are sacrificed and split into three parts: one for the family’s consumption; another for relatives; and a third portion for the underprivileged (orphans and orphanages).
In 2019, Eid Al Adha is slated to commence on Sunday, August 11, which falls on a Sunday this year.
The date is subject to vary depending on whether or not the moon will be visible.
August 31 – Al Hijri – Islamic New Year
The Islamic New Year is known as Al Hijri. This year, according to the Islamic calendar, the date for this observance is predicted to be Saturday, August 31, 2019. Because the holiday comes on a weekend, locals may be able to take the day off on Sunday. The date of the holiday will be revealed closer to the time of its observance. In December, the UAE Cabinet has granted a three-day vacation for the country. Employees in the public and private sectors will be treated to a public holiday on Sunday, December 1, in observance of Commemoration Day, as well as two days off on December 2 and 3 in observance of UAE National Day. UAE public holiday dates for 2019 confirmed by government
Officials from the UAE’s government have confirmed the dates for this year’s private and public holidays. A list of detailed facts was issued on Twitter by the Federal Human Resources Authority in response to an earlier statement that the periods will be harmonized for both industries. In a circular sent by the department, it was confirmed that there will be four days off for Eid al-Adha, one for Islamic New Year, one for Commemoration Day, and two for UAE National Day. Given that certain holidays are based on the sighting of the moon, we won’t be able to provide exact dates for the time being, but these are as near as we can come for the time being.

Working week in the UAE
- For most private sector employers in the UAE, with the exception of schools, universities, and other educational institutes, the normal work week is from Saturday to Thursday
- For most government employers, the normal work week is from Sunday to Thursday
- And Friday is the normal holiday or day off each week. For most private sector employees, Saturday is not a holiday, and banks and post offices are closed on Fridays, but open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (some post offices are closed Saturdays also). Saturday and Sunday are closed for business
- Monday through Thursday are open for business. Until 2006, the weekend in the UAE was on Thursday and Friday, and the 5 day work week was on Saturday and Wednesday, with the majority of private sector enterprises working either 512 days or 6 days on Saturday and Wednesday. For government agencies and schools, the UAE formally switched from a Thursday-Friday weekend to a Friday-Saturday weekend on Friday, September 1, 2006 (announced on May 17, 2006). A few private enterprises had already begun functioning on a Friday-Saturday schedule prior to this date. In the mid-1990s, the United Arab Emirates shifted the weekend from Friday to Saturday to Thursday to Friday.

2019 UAE public holidays
- It was originally stated that Martyrs’ Day will be celebrated on December 1, 2019, however that date was then altered (on September 8, 2019) to November 30, 2019, and then again (on October 31, 2019) to December 1, 2019.
- Those working in the public sector (government employees) will enjoy an extended long weekend break, a 5-day holiday from Friday, November 29, 2019 to Tuesday, December 3, 2019, returning to work on Wednesday, December 4, 2019. Workers in the private sector will most likely have to go to work on Saturday, November 30, but will have two days off on Sunday, December 1, and Monday, December 2, 2019. Workers in the private sector who typically have a two-day weekend should take a continuous break from Friday, November 29, 2019, to Monday, December 02, 2019, and return to work on Tuesday, December 3, or Wednesday, December 4, depending on their company.
- The UAE Cabinet published the 2019-2020 holiday schedule on October 31st. 2015 public holidays in Dubai and UAE
- The birthday of Prophet Mohammed has been set for Saturday, January 3, 2015, in the private sector. Federal and state government ministries and offices are already closed on Saturdays (WAM 28 December 2014)
- The public sector will not receive an additional day. On Thursday, January 1, 2015, both the governmental and private sectors will be closed for New Year’s Day. The Prophet’s Birthday will be celebrated on Saturday, January 3, 2015, with a holiday in the private sector as well. The announcement was made on November 14th, 2014.
2014 public holidays in the UAE
- National Day holidays for the public sector have been declared (WAM 08 Nov 2014) as 02-04 December 2014, resulting in a prolonged vacation from Tuesday, December 2, to Saturday, December 6, 2014, including the weekend. The Hijri Islamic New Year is celebrated on Saturday, October 25, 2014, and has been designated as a one-day holiday (WAM 13 November 2014) on Tuesday, December 2, 2014. A one-day holiday has been declared for the private sector
- No holiday has been declared for the public sector (but the public sector weekend is Friday-Saturday, so Saturday is an off day anyway)

The private sector will get a holiday on either Saturday, January 11th, or Sunday, January 12th, in addition to the regular weekend (Sat if Fri, Sun if Fri and Sat weekend). 2013 public holidays in the UAE
- Although the Hijri Islamic New Year falls on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, the following public holidays have been proclaimed (WAM, October 27, 2013):
- Workers in the private sector will get a day off on Saturday, November 2, 2013. Public sector employees, as well as schools and other educational institutions, will gather on Sunday, November 3, 2013. Work will proceed as usual on Tuesday, November 5, 2013.

The official dates for national holidays in the United Arab Emirates for the 2019-2020 school year were released by the government earlier this month. They have now modified the list, moving one of the holiday days to a different month. The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) took to Twitter to offer the most recent version of the holiday schedule. As a result of this, Commemoration Day has been shifted from Sunday, December 1, to Saturday, November 30, according to the tweet.
- The day of remembrance has traditionally been observed on November 30th.
- It has now been rescheduled for November 30th, which happens to be a Saturday this year.
