12 famous buildings in Dubai
The city of Dubai is well-known for its gleaming desert skyscrapers, but it wasn’t always like this. It used to be a little fishing community that existed less than 200 years ago. In fact, for many decades, most of the city’s buildings were little more than two floors tall. The discovery of oil in Dubai in the 1960s changed the course of the city’s history, and a decision was taken in the 1980s to transform the commercial port into a luxury tourist destination. During this time period, a flurry of beautiful structures were created at breakneck speed, including the seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel, which opened its doors in 1994.
The following are 12 of Dubai’s most well-known structures:
Cayan Tower
As it rises skyward, the Cayan Tower is characterized by a spectacular twist. And it’s not only for show that it’s in this shape. A skyscraper database maintained by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) indicates that every one of the building’s 73 storeys was planned using the exact identical layout, except that each level was rotated 1.2 degrees clockwise from the one below it.
Furthermore, in addition to being visually appealing, its helix form serves to shade interior areas from direct sunlight while simultaneously lessening the structural impact of high winds.
Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), the architecture company responsible for the skyscraper, was also responsible for the world-record-breaking Burj Khalifa.
Jumeirah Mosque

There’s more to Dubai’s architecture than just futuristic towers, as you can see in this video. TheJumeirah Mosqueis an excellent example of a structure that was influenced by a long-gone era. The mosque, which was built in the Fatimid architectural tradition, which is generally associated with medieval Islamic Egypt, is constructed entirely of white stone, which creates a spectacular visual impact when illuminated by the setting sun.
The Jumeirah Mosque has a capacity of around 1,200 worshippers and is one of the few mosques in the United Arab Emirates that enables non-Muslims to enter without being turned away.

Jumeirah Emirates Towers

In terms of Dubai’s skyline, they are the fraternal twins – two structures that seem a lot similar but aren’t exactly the same as each other. A total of 54 floors are occupied by workplaces at Jumeirah Emirates Tower One, the taller of the two buildings at almost 355 meters (1,163 feet) in height.
They’re each topped with characteristic equilateral triangles and a spire to distinguish them from one another.

The resort is situated on a group of man-made islands known as the Palm Islands, so named because its form is reminiscent of palm leaves.
Dubai Mall
The Dubai Mall is a whole universe unto itself. Shopping, eating, and entertainment are available at this location. Every year, an estimated 80 million people – approximately equivalent to the entire population of Turkey – visit the Dubai Mall. The project’s design team, DP Architects, had a significant task in combining more than 1,200 stores, parking for 14,000 vehicles, a massive indoor aquarium, ice skating rink, and other amenities into a passable area that was also environmentally friendly.

Dubai’s Other Mall
Though it is not as large as the Dubai Mall, the Mall of the Emirates nevertheless dwarfs the majority of American shopping malls in terms of floor space and variety of merchandise. Aside from Ski Dubai, which is the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort and snow park, The Mall of the Emirates has a lot of other interesting things to offer. The running joke in Dubai is that the city owns the global record for having the most number of world records, which it does not deny. With anything from the world’s longest graffiti exhibition to the world’s largest billboard, you can’t travel more than one city block without coming across another one of Dubai’s incredible achievements. If there was ever a place that could be described as a “overachiever,” Dubai would be it. The following is only a short selection of some of the most noteworthy world records that Dubai has to offer.

Approximately 150 artists, both local and foreign, were commissioned by the Crown Prince to develop and create artwork that highlights the achievements of the United Arab Emirates.
5. Tallest Hotel
When the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel opened in Dubai in 2012, it set another another global record for the city.
The five-star hotel rises to 1,164 feet in height, just surpassing the previous record-holder, which stood at 1,092 feet. That hotel, of course, is also located in the city of Dubai.
6. Largest Sticky Note Mosaic
You did read that accurately. Dubai intended to construct the world’s biggest post-it mosaic, which would take up an entire city block. As a result, they did. The mosaic was created in order to raise awareness of autism in the United Arab Emirates. 6258 square feet of artwork, 300,000 sticky notes, and a large number of paper cuts were required to complete the project.
7. Longest 22-Karat HandMade Gold Chain
The Dubai Shopping Festival, which marked its 20th anniversary this year, was one of Dubai’s most recent triumphs. Following the usual 10 second digital countdown on the illuminated façade of the Burj Khalifa, the clock struck midnight, signaling the start of a record-breaking eight-minute and forty-three-second fireworks display over Downtown Dubai’s skyline and the surrounding area.
It was estimated that 1,371 kg of pyrotechnics were used in the performance, which was spread out among a whopping 207 shooting spots.
Everything about the event, from the fireworks to the animations on the Burj Khalifa LED façade to musical compositions and a stunning fountain show, was as enthralling as it had been promised to be.
In order to ensure that the show’s unique pyrotechnics designs and effects were genuinely one-of-a kind, all pyrotechnic effects were carefully selected and made for the occasion.
The choreography for the world-famous show took 160 hours over four weeks, and it featured 113.5 kilolitres of water in the air at one moment, released from an incredible 1,137 water shooters, as well as 6,612 lights.
