The number of overseas visitors increased by 5.1 percent last year, but the country is still far short of its 2020 objective of 20 million visitors.

“While the global economy remains in a state of flux, we can clearly see an exciting opportunity to further grow Dubai’s dominance in the tourism industry in 2020,” he added.

1.6 million Saudi tourists visited the city-state, which is one of seven sheikhdoms that make up the United Arab Emirates, in the years that followed.

Visits from Oman have climbed by 24 percent to more than one million, placing the neighboring nation in fourth place in terms of visitor numbers.

However, it predicts a $700 million loss for the fourth year in a row, which is the most on record.

As the only Gulf state not reliant on hydrocarbon earnings, Dubai expects to generate roughly 94 percent of its revenue from non-oil sources in the next years. It features a huge number of luxurious retail complexes, luxury resorts, and even an indoor ski slope in the middle of the desert.
