Ski Dubai: Hitting the Slopes in the Desert

The first time I heard about Ski Dubai, shortly after it opened in 2005, I was completely fascinated. How could someone construct an indoor snow skiing resort in the middle of the Sahara Desert? News stories and television programs on the resort’s construction that I’ve seen over the years have left a lasting impression on me. Recent travel opportunities presented themselves for me, including a trip to Qatar for an educational conference. I knew that a side trip to Dubai would be a part of that experience, and I knew that visiting Ski Dubai would be a big reason for making that trip.

  1. On the day I went skiing with my family, we spent the day cooling off at the Aquaventure Water Park at the Atlantis Palm Hotel, which was scorching hot at 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius).
  2. This particular ski resort is actually located within The Mall of The Emirates.
  3. Although the commercials offer a variety of slopes ranging from novice to black diamond, I discovered that the majority of the trails were for beginners, with one slope having an intermediate pitch and one slope having a difficult pitch.
  4. The Snow Park includes sled and toboggan runs, a body slide, climbing towers, an ice cave, a penguin exhibition, and a hill where visitors can get inside a giant ball and roll down it to their satisfaction.
  5. It seems to me that the majority of visitors to Ski Dubai came to enjoy the Snow Park and to have a good time in the snow.
  6. Additionally, mall visitors may observe the skiers through a number of giant windows, which adds to the excitement of Ski Dubai.
  7. Moritz Cafe and TGIFridays, that have views over the skiing and Snow Park regions and provide a variety of cuisines.

We chose a snowboarding session.

We had come to ski, so we opted for the package that provided us with two hours on the slopes.

The two-hour skiing package, which cost 200 Dirhams ($55) per person, was really one of the more affordable alternatives available.

The only additional expense we incurred was a minor price of 40 Dirhams ($12) for a locker rental, with the remaining 20 Dirhams being refunded when our admission cards were returned.

Check out this page onoppbevaraingsskab hhl to discover which ones are the most appropriate for you.

Gloves are an absolute essential.

However, most customers could get by for at least two hours without using a ski mask or other protective headgear.

It took some time to figure out how to handle the wardrobe and fitting procedure.

It was a little less structured than other ski resorts, but that was reasonable considering that the vast majority of people were not receiving ski equipment at the time.

All lockers are located in the shared changing room part of the facility.

We were also able to locate a locker where we could store all of our non-skiing belongings with relative ease.

Considering that the temperature outside was approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), the drop in temperature to 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 degrees Celsius) was really rather nice.

A quad lift or tow line transports skiers and snowboarders to the summit of the mountain.

Because the quad lift chair was shared with Snow Park tourists, there was occasionally a brief wait period.

It turns out that the rope tow was a wonderful experience in and of itself!

Furthermore, it informed us of the amount of time we had left to ski.

The slopes make a 90-degree curve in the middle of the course.

The Avalanche Cafe, a modest cafe and warming lodge located at the midway point of the trail, is also available.

How did you find the skiing?

I ski in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania on a daily basis, and I also travel to Vermont and Upstate New York for skiing on occasion.

The paths were covered in a thick layer of groomed packed powder and were not icy in the least.

It was only sometimes employed.

Over the course of almost 2 hours, I completed 14 runs down the mountain.

The one thing that disappointed me was that they did not have any ski pins or patches for me to purchase to add to my collection of ski resorts that I have visited over the years.

It is mandatory to visit Ski Dubai while in Dubai if you like skiing or snowboarding in any way, shape, or form in any manner, shape, or form. It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that should not be missed.

Ski Dubai is the world’s third largest indoor ski slope, and it is located in the Dubai Emirates Mall, which is a short walk from the mall’s entrance. This building, which was built using 6000 tons of snow, first opened its doors to the public in December 2005. Nightly snowfall amounts to 3000 tons (3000 tons of new snow). They maintain a consistent temperature of -1 to -2 degrees Celsius, except for generating snow, in which case they lower the temperature to -7 to -8 degrees Celsius to get the desired result (at night).

The cost of entry covers the rental of equipment and apparel for the event.

The modern facility includes a ski school that provides instruction for both novices and those looking to enhance their abilities on the slopes.

Of course, there are food and retail options available at the mall.

Chutes:

There is no topography that resembles a chute in this area. Take the chair all the way to the top and turn left. The toughest segment of this route is located on the “Mountain.” The grade on the run to your right remains constant.

Moguls:

When it comes to mogul runs in Dubai, the best is the one you make yourself with a shovel. Please do not confuse a downed skier in a white turban and dishdasha for a mogul when you see one. It’s important to remember that moguls do not scream when you ski across them.

Trees and powder:

It is true that they have a few artificial fir trees, but not nearly enough to ski around in and there is no snow.

Out of Bounds Areas:

Snow is absent from out of limits places, reducing the attractiveness of the remote wilderness areas that many people seek in the Rocky Mountains.

Beginners and Intermediates:

Beginners can find lots of moderately inclined terrain in Dubai, which is ideal for them. Due to the fact that 100 percent of the trails are designated for novices, you will not be at risk of falling victim to a deadly double black diamond. Oh well, that’s a bummer. They claim to have completed a single black diamond run (upper skier right). If you are pushed down the lift line, you are more likely to tumble. Dubai brings world’s longest indoor ski slope to the desert

The desert kingdom of Dubai is constructing the world’s longest indoor ski slope, which will open in the near future. Dubai announced plans this week to construct a new complex that, when completed, will house the world’s tallest residential building, the largest dancing fountain, and an indoor ski slope with a 1.2-kilometer (0.75-mile) run — approximately three times longer than the current world record holder in Germany and nearly twice as long as the current world record holder in Dubai. At an estimated cost of $6.8 billion, the first phase of the 40-million-square-foot project, known as Meydan One, is expected to be finished by 2020 at a cost of 40 million square feet.

Despite temperatures that may exceed 113 degrees Fahrenheit, snow is generated there all year round.

An estimated 350-room hotel, marina, and shopping center with retractable roof and 300 restaurants will be part of the Meydan One development.

There will also be more than 78,000 people living in the region.

The Bluewaters development off The Beach at JBR, which is an island development off the coast of Dubai, will soon be home to the city’s first wax museum. Located in Dubai, the museum will be owned and operated by Merlin, the same company that manages Legoland. However, no information has been released about which celebrities will be on display at the Dubai Tussauds. The image was taken from Facebook at www.facebook.com/pg/officialmadametussaudslondon.

Dubai to build world’s longest indoor ski slope

Not content with the approximately 103 Guinness World Records it already holds – including the world’s tallest building, longest handmade gold chain, and, oh yes, the world’s largest tennis ball mosaic – the United Arab Emirates is also set to become the home of the world’s longest indoor ski slope when it opens in 2019. Plans to construct a 1.2-kilometer slope in the city of Dubai were revealed earlier this month by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai.

  • (Photo courtesy of the Meydan City Corporation) Part of the vast Meydan One development, which will include a mall, 711-meter-tall building, civic center, 4-kilometer canal, and marina with 100 docking spaces.
  • The project’s total cost has not been released at this time.
  • However, it is not the world’s longest indoor slope – and that simply will not suffice for the record-seeking United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • By comparison, the length of Dubai’s indoor slope will be little more than half the length of Bottrop’s 640-meter indoor slope.
  • Furthermore, the complex is expected to contain the world’s tallest residential tower and the world’s biggest fountain, with the latter reaching more than 420m in circumference.

The most challenging ski routes on the planet The University of East Anglia’s penchant for record-breaking is no secret; in 2013, Guinness World Records opened an office in Dubai to handle the influx of record attempts from all over the world.

How does it compare?

How will the Dubai slope compare to the finest “free-range” pistes, despite the fact that it will be nearly twice the length of the current longest indoor slope and nearly seven times the length of the greatest attempt in the United Kingdom (Chill Factore in Manchester, with 180m), is an open question.

Ski Dubai

Consider the following scenario: it’s 45 degrees outside, you’re wearing gloves and a hat, and you’re riding a chairlift through a simulated alpine winter wonderland. Do you want to go skiing in the desert? It’s not an issue. That is, if you live in Dubai. Since its inception as the Middle East’s first indoor ski resort in 2005, Ski Dubai has pleased a diverse range of visitors, from slope-deprived expatriates to curious tourists and snow virgins alike. Of course, when compared to the Alps, Ski Dubai’s’mountain’ is a mere ant hill, but it is tough enough for beginners, enjoyable for intermediate skiers, and a novelty for more skilled skiers.

  1. All of the necessary equipment, including socks and skis, is given; however, gloves and caps must be purchased separately from the integrated store unless you chance to have your own.
  2. Snow bunnies of all ages may enjoy have a good time in the Snow Park, which is decorated with ice sculptures and other festive decorations.
  3. A few more dirhams will also be required if you want to meet the resident gentoo and king penguins, who parade around the Snow Park many times a day and require special permission to see them.
  4. The Après restaurant, which is located on the same floor as the hotel, offers a panoramic view of the slopes.

I tried out Dubai’s indoor ski slope in the desert — but while it’s undeniably a technical marvel, the novelty doesn’t last long

In November, I traveled to Ski Dubai, which is located in the Mall of the Emirates. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

  • One of Dubai’s massive malls, which is home to the Middle East’s first indoor ski slope, is where I went skiing recently. It cost me $57 for two hours on the slopes, which included skiing attire and equipment such as skis, poles, and a helmet. I found it strange to be travelling from the scorching heat of the desert to the air-conditioned comfort of a shopping mall before arriving in the snow. I was also acutely aware of the fact that I was in a retail mall rather than on top of a mountain. It was an exciting experience, and the snow was smooth, but there was only one slope, which meant that I was genuinely considering leaving a quarter of the time remaining in my session

Dubai is well-known for being a city that goes above and beyond. As a result, having a desert ski slope within a retail center, complete with actual snow, is a very good fit for the brand. On a recent vacation, I decided to check it out to see what it’s like to go from desert heat of more than 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius) to a sub-zero artificial mountain in sub-zero temperatures. Although the contrast between actual Alpine skiing in a location like France and the way Dubai has managed to construct an artificial counterpart in one of the least snowy regions on the planet was fascinating, it was not very persuasive.

The novelty of this miracle, on the other hand, wore off far faster than I had anticipated. Here’s what it was like on the inside.

The ski slope itself looks pretty strange as you approach, sticking out and up into the air.

As you approach the mall, here is the perspective of one of the sides of the building. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

From the general mall you can see insider its wintery zone through huge windows. Lots of people were taking pictures.

People snap photos of the slopes — or of themselves with the slopes — in order to remember them. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

Here’s the way in.

The entryway gave me a good idea of where I was going. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

I had a heap of options for how to spend my day there, including bobsledding, meeting penguins, and skiing or snowboarding lessons. I went for the simplest one: a pass for two hours of skiing, which cost $57.

Because of the entryway, I knew exactly where I was supposed to go. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from the United Kingdom.

The entrance area was filled with gift shops and a winter sports store. This part felt like being in the mountains.

You can bring your own gear — but Ski Dubai assumes you won’t have it, and equipment rental is part of the price.

I was asked for my shoe size, and an attendant got my boots and fitted them to a pair of skis for me.

If the boots don’t fit well, you can switch them. Mine felt a little too large, but not so much that I felt like I needed to change them.

The boots were made by Rossignol, which is a well-known manufacturer of ski equipment. Skiing in Dubai

Then I gave my sizes for jackets, pants, and socks and got changed.

A weird point is that the outfit had no proper pockets. I kept my phone, somewhat awkwardly, in a wrist pocket meant for your ski pass, which interfered a little with scanning the pass when I needed it.

In most cases, ski coats contain a pocket somewhere on the left arm, which allows you to be scanned without having to take your ski pass out of your pockets. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

Then it was up an escalator and out into the snow. The slope stretched up above me, turning slightly so that I couldn’t see the very top.

I took the chair lift up, and checked out the slopes below. There was a mix of skill levels — some people were clearly first-timers, alongside some really competent skiers and boarders.

I went on Friday — the start of the UAE’s weekend. However, the slope turned out to not be very busy. Here is the longest line I saw for the lift.

I often had a comfy, 4-person chair to myself.

In each row, four individuals could sit comfortably, and the chairs were rather comfortable. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

There are two stops: an easy slope from the middle station, or a longer run from the top.

The bar was raised, and you had the option of skiing off to the right or remaining seated to continue moving higher. Sinéad Baker is a singer-songwriter from Ireland.

Finally, it was time to ski!

The slopes definitely looked bigger from up here. The track starts as one wide slope, which splits into two further down.

The snow was really smooth and had none of the problems that come with outdoor conditions, like icy patches and rocks.

At the split in the slope, “experts” were meant to go down one side.

The skiing felt great — I’d not been on a ski slope for almost a year, and it was both fun and surreal to get to do so in the Middle East.

However — the run is pretty short, nothing compared to a real mountain. It takes about a minute to get up. For a reasonably experienced skier, it will take much less than that to get down.

I also tried Ski Dubai’s two drag lifts — a different type of life that pulls you up via a pole. They are quicker than using the chairlift, but not as relaxing.

After about 30 minutes, another skier asked me aloud what there was to do for the other 90 minutes. It was a good point

One part of the slope had a snow park, with ramps and jumps. I spent some time there, but it was quite busy with younger kids. Instead I worked on my technique and tried to see how fast I could go.

After a few more runs, I still had 80 minutes to go, and was stuck for ideas for how to spend my time.

However, skiing like I did was not the only option. Ski Dubai has fenced-off areas where beginners can take lessons.

The placard made it quite apparent that this was not a place for me.

There was also another area where people could have fun inside a plastic Zorb Ball. I avoided that.

I even spotted people with no skis or boards who were just there to ride the lifts and check out the snow.

This invigorated me to get back on the slopes.

I ultimately left with about 20 minutes to go, after pretty thoroughly doing all the skiing I could. I changed, got my stuff out of my locker, and put Ski Dubai’s clothes and equipment in their bins.

Going back to the desert heat from the mall felt even stranger than going in. It’s easy to spend your time in taxis, metros, and shops that have air conditioning in Dubai, completely forgetting the heat around you.

I was happy with my skiing experience, though I think Ski Dubai should considering offering a one-hour pass for lots of people. For first-timers, the novelty definitely makes it worth a trip.

Purchases of $100 or more at the Outside Shop, where you’ll discover gear for all of your outdoor excursions, will earn you $50 off your purchase. Sign up for Outside+ as soon as possible. As I make my way to the Mall of the Emirates, a 2,400,352-square-foot monster that includes the first indoor ski run in the Middle East, “Ski Dubai,” the temperature is a scorching 92 degrees and humid. It has five routes, including the world’s first indoor black diamond run with a 200-foot drop, which is housed within the massive dome.

  • Skis, a ski jacket, snow pants, boots, socks (which I retain), and skis are included in the $40 ticket for a 2-hour period.
  • Couple of men in long white jelabas are neatly stuffing the skirts of their snow pants in the nearby parking lot.
  • The massive ski dome, which is kept at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, is accessed by a revolving door.
  • With the exception of the blueish light that gives me the impression that I’m inside a refrigerator, this seems like a typical ski slope.
  • When I reach the mid-station of the lift, I stop to watch a snowboarder carving elegant turns down the hill.
  • What exactly did I do wrong?
  • Finally, he pantomimes that I should pull the safety bar down from the ceiling.

This is quite steep, and it has been so long since I have turned that I have forgotten how to do so.

I’m determined to get down the slope, even if that means sliding down the slope on my behind.

What if someone runs into me and I end up with a broken leg?

A steep run or a large bump weren’t too difficult for me thirty-five years ago when I was naive, bold, and self-possessed.

I take a deep breath and push off, traversing across the ledge and arriving at the edge in seconds.

I’m in a state of terror.

Three Arab guys whizz by on skis as they pass by.

Everyone appears to be an expert in their field.

I practice parallel turns with my snowplow until I am confident enough to plant my pole and make a parallel turn.

It’s all coming back to me now.

I can see people waving to me from the glass windows of the restaurants that overlook the hill below.

I’m on public display!

After collecting my breath, I begin skiing again.

When I reach to the bottom of the slope, I think about how I waited all winter for it to become spring and summer so that I could bike and run outside.

I’m not the only one. I’m suddenly overjoyed that winter is almost here, because it will allow me to escape to the slopes – which will be both outdoors and considerably closer to home.

What to Bring with You

Bringing your own hat and gloves to the Mall of the Emirates is an option if you don’t want to spend the money on them at the mall. We also recommend that you bring a pair of sturdy, calf-level socks with you (such as hiking socks). We were both wearing low-cut socks, and the ski boots scratched raw spots on our calves as a result of the friction. A couple of delighted skiers!
