  • The following sections cover the following topics: overview, payment information, restrictions, visa types and application fee amounts, visa types and conditions for which no fee is required, and other fees.

Overview

Before applying for a nonimmigrant visa, all visa applicants, including minors, are required to pay a non-refundable, non-transferable visa application fee, also known as the MRV charge, which is not refundable and is not transferable. The visa application cost must be paid regardless of whether or not a visa is obtained. The amount of the cost is determined on the type of visa for which you are applying. You may also be required to pay a visa issuance or “reciprocity”fee, which varies depending on your citizenship and the type of visa you are seeking for.

Please keep in mind that this page only contains information on the application costs for nonimmigrant visas.

Payment Information

However, despite the fact that fees are mentioned in US dollars, payment must be made in the local currency. You can pay your charge at any major financial institution. More information about payment methods may be found here.

Restrictions

There are no refunds for visa application fees, and you are unable to transfer them to another individual. After paying the application cost, you will be sent a receipt to keep track of your expenses. After one year from the date of payment, you can schedule an appointment with the U.S. Embassy in order to complete your application. You must arrange your interview while the receipt is still valid, which means that your interview must be scheduled within one year after making your payment for the cost.

You will be required to pay the cost again and begin the procedure all over again.

  • Applicants

Other Fees

Additionally, extra visa fees may be paid directly to the National Visa Center, the United States Embassy, or the Department of Homeland Security in rare instances.

Nonimmigrant Visa Issuance (“Reciprocity”) Fees

Once an applicant’s visa application has been granted, applicants from certain countries may be asked to pay a visa issuance fee. These fees are based on the concept of “reciprocity” (what another country charges a U.S. citizen for a similar-type of visa). Whenever feasible, the United States seeks to reduce visa issuance costs; but, when a foreign government imposes such fees on residents of the United States for specific types of visas, the United States will charge a “reciprocal” price on people of that nation for visas of a similar nature.

SEVIS Fees

It is the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) that follows F, M, and J visa participants (and their family members) from the time they obtain their initial documents (either an I-20 or a DS-2019) until they graduate or leave school, or until they complete or leave a program. Principal candidates for F, M, and J visas include: Ensure that all of your information has been submitted into SEVIS by contacting your U.S. institution of higher learning. In addition to the visa application price, you will be required to pay a supplementary SEVIS charge as well.

The Department of Homeland Security will maintain the $35 I-901 SEVIS Fee for J exchange visitors who fall into the categories of au pair, camp counselor, and summer work travel program participants, but will increase the full I-901 SEVIS Fee for all other J exchange visitors from $180 to $220, effective immediately.

Paying the SEVIS fee is simple and may be done online by following the instructions here.

SEVIS Fee Exception

Applicants who are engaging in a program funded by the United States government (programs with codes beginning with G-1, G-2, G-3, or G-7) are not needed to pay the SEVIS fee.

Blanket L Fee (Fraud Prevention and Detection Fee)

Principal applicants who are covered by a blanket petition for L status must pay a US $500 Fraud Prevention and Detection cost in addition to the L status application price. This charge should be paid in cash to the cashier at the Consular Section on the day of the interview, unless otherwise specified. It is necessary to collect the Fraud Prevention and Detection charge a second time if a later L-1 visa application is based on a different Form I-129S. The price for Fraud Prevention and Detection can only be paid in cash or by credit card at the US Embassy on the day of the interview, in either local currency or US dollars (credit cards as Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, American Express, and Discover are accepted).

US Visa Application Fees – How Much Does a US Visa Cost?

The process of applying for a visa to the United States is not free. Instead, you’ll have to pay a variety of US visa fees and application expenses before you can enter the country. The cost of an American visa is determined on the type of visa you wish to obtain as well as the country from which you are applying. You must pay fees for nonimmigrant visas to the United States, immigrant visas to the United States, and the United States diversity visa.

These are application expenses, whereas other charges include reciprocity fees and other administrative fees. When someone applies for a visa, they must pay reciprocity fees, which are charges that other nations must pay based on their connection with the United States.

US Nonimmigrant Visa Application Fees

It is not free to apply for a visa to the United States. Rather, you will be required to pay a variety of US visa prices as well as US visa application fees. It is necessary to pay fees for nonimmigrant visas, immigrant visas, and the US diversity visa in order to travel to the United States legally. It is sufficient for the applicant to submit Form DS-160, Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, and then follow the standard procedures of paying the fees, arranging the interview, presenting supporting documentation, and attending their interview. In order to get a petition-based visa, an employer or a representative from the United States must petition on behalf of the applicant who want to temporarily reside and work in the United States.

In addition, the petitioner must pay a cost for the petition, which varies based on the kind of visa sought.

  • And for members of the military who are traveling on official business.

US Nonimmigrant Visa Reciprocity Fees

The reciprocity fees charged by the United States for visas issued to nonimmigrants are another aspect that influences the cost of a visa to the United States. These fees cover the cost of issuing the visa as well as the cost of border crossing cards. However, only non-immigrant visas are subject to reciprocity costs; immigrant visas, on the other hand, are exempt. The fees for reciprocity are determined by the nation in which you are presently resident and from where you are submitting your application, as well as the passport that you hold.

An application may not be required to pay a reciprocity fee in certain circumstances, such as when the applicant meets the following criteria:

  • Members of the United Nations Headquarters or the United Nations General Assembly, as well as their families, are considered to be part of international accords. On the way to the United Nations Headquarters
  • Participants in a United States government-sponsored program, as well as their spouses and children
  • Traveling to raise funds for a good cause

US Immigrant Visa Fees

  • Preference for Immediate Relatives or Members of the Family There is a fee for Immigration Applications of 325.00 USD in addition to the petition
  • Employment-Based Immigration Applications of 345.00 USD in addition to the petition
  • Other immigration applications (such as self-petitioning) of 205.00 USD
  • K visa for a fiancé or spouse of a US citizen costs 265.00 USD
  • Certain Afghan or Iraqi special immigrant applications are exempt from a fee.

The Affidavit of Support, which costs 120.00 USD, is another expense that is customary for most immigrant visa applications. The cost is paid by sponsors who are US citizens who can promise that they will financially assist the application until they are able to settle in and begin working in the United States.

US Diversity Visa Fees

People who wish to test their luck and see if they may get picked for a US immigrant visa through the US Diversity Visa or Lottery should enter the US Diversity Visa or Lottery. Each time, candidates sign up, and the US universities determine how many visa winners will be selected each year based on the number of applicants that sign up. Normal sign-up time is in November, and applications are then considered throughout the rest of the year. With the exception of the application or sign-up fee, there aren’t many payments associated with the diversity visa.

Please keep in mind that these costs are current as of January 2018 and may change.

Additionally, please carefully consider any instructions you receive from the US Embassy or Consulate where you intend to submit your application.
