Design

Built to define Dubai’s skyline, the Burj Al Arab was planned by architect Tom Wright of WS Atkins as a superstructure. Approximately 250 designers from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Dubai participated to the project throughout the course of its duration. It’s possible that you’re thinking of the Burj Al Arab as a sailboat, but its shape is really based on the sail of a dhow, a traditional Arabian fishing vessel used for fishing and pearl harvesting.

Structure

Tom Wright of WS Atkins designed the Burj Al Arab as a superstructure to characterize Dubai’s skyline, and it was completed in 2007. In total, 250 designers from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Dubai worked on the project throughout the course of its duration. If you look closely enough, the Burj Al Arab has the appearance of a sailing ship, but its design is really based on the sail of an Arabian fishing vessel known for its pearling and fishing operations, known as a dhow.

Interior

Khuan Chew of KCA International was tasked with designing the inside of the Burj Al Arab, and he took inspiration from the nature and culture of the surrounding area. Earth tones and beautiful materials from all around the globe, such as chandeliers, rugs, and 30 different types of marble, were combined to create a concept of traditional Arabic hospitality that was permeated throughout the hotel. There is an atrium with a central fountain and a flowing waterfall, as well as columns that have been adorned with 24-karat gold leaf, in the inside of the Burj Al Arab.

Facilities

Many extra features are included in the design of the Burj Al Arab’s architectural structure. There are seven restaurants and bars within the hotel, in addition to the beach-side bar, including a restaurant and bar located on the 27th level, which provides breathtaking views over Dubai and the Persian Gulf. The gold-domed ballroom, which is illuminated by a Swarovski crystal chandelier, was created as part of the hotel’s conference and banquet facilities, which also feature five board rooms and a ballroom for weddings.

Burj al Arab, Dubai

The Burj al Arab (also known as the Arabian Tower) is a luxury hotel in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, that is located on an artificial island about 300 meters from the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. With a height of 321 meters, it is the third-tallest hotel in the world and one of the most costly, with an estimated cost of $7.8 billion USD. The Burj Jumeirah 550-meter tower in Dubai will be completed in 2019. Although Dubai had seen economic prosperity in the 1990s as a result of oil profits, government authorities realized that dwindling reserves would need a shift in the economy, and so they focused on luxury tourism and real estate development.

  1. Atkins, under the direction of architect Tom Wright, built a high-tech structure to imitate the billowing sail of a traditionalArab ‘dhow’ or boat, complete with a retractable roof.
  2. Despite this, since its formal inauguration in December 1999, the Burj al Arab has achieved its goal of being an iconic emblem of Dubai, which it has done so successfully.
  3. The artificial island that was erected required to be constructed at a low enough elevation to give the appearance that the structure was floating on water.
  4. For the purpose of reducing the danger of flooding, perforated concrete blocks were installed on the bedrock in a honeycomb pattern, which served as a gigantic artificial “sponge” to absorb the force of waves.
  5. More than 70,000 m3 of concrete and 9,000 tons of steel were used in the construction of the structure.
  6. In the form of two wings spreading out in a V-shape, the building’s arrangement creates a’mast’ that surrounds a massiveatrium.
  7. There are 202 hotel suites, each of which is divided into two floors, the upper floor of which has a curving facade and balcony.

The external sides were reinforced by giantmetaltrusses with a triangular section, each reaching 85 m in length, in order to ensure suitable rigidity.

In order to allow the expansion and contraction of these trusses, a specific steering linkage rod had to be built to accommodate this movement.

This facility is mostly utilized as a helipad, although it has also been the site of various public events, the most notable of which was a tennis exhibition match between Roger Federer and Andre Agassi in 2005.

As one of the world’s most expensive hotels (and the only one to have received the unofficial media accolade of “7 stars”), the interior was built to be grandiose, eclectic, and baroque in style.

Water can be found around the hotel in aquariums and fountains, while fire can be seen in an entry fountain, along with steam symbolizing the element of air.

Apart from that, the hotel is known for its two different restaurants.

a cantilever that extends 27 meters (89 feet) on either side of the tower, and a set of 1.6-meter-thick steel beams that radiate out from the column toward the restaurant’s perimeter.

In addition to a vast seawater aquarium, the Al Mahara (Oyster) may be reached by a simulation of a submarine expedition. The acrylic-glass tank’s wall is 18cm (7.1 in) thick in order to resist the water pressure within.

12 famous buildings in Dubai

The city of Dubai is well-known for its gleaming desert skyscrapers, but it wasn’t always like this. It used to be a little fishing community that existed less than 200 years ago. In fact, for many decades, most of the city’s buildings were little more than two floors tall. The discovery of oil in Dubai in the 1960s changed the course of the city’s history, and a decision was taken in the 1980s to transform the commercial port into a luxury tourist destination. During this time period, a flurry of beautiful structures were created at breakneck speed, including the seven-star Burj Al Arab hotel, which opened its doors in 1994.

The following are 12 of Dubai’s most well-known structures:

Cayan Tower

As it rises skyward, the Cayan Tower is characterized by a spectacular twist. And it’s not only for show that it’s in this shape. Image courtesy of Karim Sahib/AFP/Getty Images 2013 | Date of first opening: Apartments with a high level of comfort The Cayan Tower, which is 306 meters (1,005 ft) tall, is distinguished by its distinctive helical design, which sets it apart from the other buildings along Dubai’s shoreline. A skyscraper database maintained by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) indicates that every one of the building’s 73 storeys was planned using the exact identical layout, except that each level was rotated 1.2 degrees clockwise from the one below it.

Furthermore, in addition to being visually appealing, its helix form serves to shade interior areas from direct sunlight while simultaneously lessening the structural impact of high winds.

Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), the architecture company responsible for the skyscraper, was also responsible for the world-record-breaking Burj Khalifa.

Jumeirah Mosque

There’s more to Dubai’s architecture than just futuristic towers, as you can see in this video. TheJumeirah Mosqueis an excellent example of a structure that was influenced by a long-gone era. The mosque, which was built in the Fatimid architectural tradition, which is generally associated with medieval Islamic Egypt, is constructed entirely of white stone, which creates a spectacular visual impact when illuminated by the setting sun.

The Jumeirah Mosque has a capacity of around 1,200 worshippers and is one of the few mosques in the United Arab Emirates that enables non-Muslims to enter without being turned away.

What if I told you something you already knew? The Jumeirah Mosque occupies such a prominent position in Dubai’s cultural identity that it is depicted on the city’s 500 dirham banknote.

They’re each topped with characteristic equilateral triangles and a spire to distinguish them from one another.

Other design elements include sculptures of pharaohs and sandstone-colored dogs, as well as columns with hieroglyphics carved into the stonework.

Dubai Opera

The interior of Dubai’s $330 million opera theater is stunning. Date of opening: 2016 | Type of use: entertainment venue Dubai Opera is a must-see for anybody who believes that opera buildings are usually dripping with ornate embellishments from 19th-century European architecture. The façade is a lovely combination of historical and contemporary elements. Even though the structure is designed in the style of an old-world wooden sailing ship – a nod to Dubai’s nautical heritage – the inside promenade is illuminated by bright lights that can be seen through modern walls of glass.

There is enough space for up to 2,000 people.

From “Phantom of the Opera” to “Othello,” the Dubai Opera has presented a variety of shows – and even a showing of “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” accompanied by live music from the Czech National Symphony Orchestra – since its inception in 2016.

Two decades later, it’s easy to take for granted the kind of daring, innovative resort development that was accomplished. The Jumeirah Beach Hotel, on the other hand, has stood the test of time. It is relatively tall, reaching a height of 104 meters despite the building’s broad horizontal shape (341 feet).

Every year, an estimated 80 million people – approximately equivalent to the entire population of Turkey – visit the Dubai Mall. The project’s design team, DP Architects, had a significant task in combining more than 1,200 stores, parking for 14,000 vehicles, a massive indoor aquarium, ice skating rink, and other amenities into a passable area that was also environmentally friendly.

What if I told you something you already knew?

The mall was connected to the newDubai Mall Zabeel by an air-conditioned footbridge that was completed in 2019.

Uses: A variety of uses There would be no point in this list if it didn’t include the highest building in Dubai, the Middle East, and the globe. When it first opened its doors in 2010, the Burj Khalifa dethroned Taipei 101 and elevated Dubai to new heights, both physically and symbolically. Besides being the world’s tallest building at 828 meters (2,716 ft or more than half a mile), the so-called “megatall” building is also home to the world’s highest observation deck and the world’s longest elevator travel.

What if I told you something you already knew? The building makes use of “natural air conditioning,” which draws cooler air from the top of the tower and circulates it throughout the structure.

Burj al Arab Hotel Dubai

Tom Wright, Design Director, answers some of the most frequently asked questions about the design of the Burj Al Arab. What was the brief for the construction of the building? The customer requested that we construct a structure that would serve as a symbol for the city of Dubai. As Sydney has the Sydney Opera House and New York has the Statue of Liberty, it is only natural that Dubai would have a building that people would connect with the city. What is it about a structure that makes it symbolic?

  • We discovered that they are all completely distinct in shape, and that they all have a simple, immediately recognised shape to them.
  • Adrian Welch’s photograph Why did you design the Burj al Arab structure to resemble a gigantic sail, and what was the inspiration behind it?
  • When combined with Dubai’s maritime tradition, it looked like a natural form to use.
  • It contributes to its distinctiveness.
  • If it was on the shore, it would block the sun from reaching the beach throughout the middle of the day, which would be a problem.
  • The building is constructed of sand, which is uncommon because most towering structures are constructed of rock.
  • Because there is only sand to support the structure, the columns rely on friction to keep the structure upright.
  • The screen that encloses the third side of the Burj al Arab atrium is constructed of 1mm thick glass fibre cloth that has been treated with a Teflon coating to prevent debris from adhering to the surface of the fabric.
  • It is suspended from the top of the building by more than a kilometre of 52mm cable, which is the largest in the world.
  • In the side of the Burj al Arab skyscraper, there are diagonal trusses that are the length of a football field and weigh the equivalent of 20 double-decker buses.

It took a whole day to lift and install the tallest truss. If one man were to construct the structure from the ground up, it would take around 8,000 years to complete.

Burj al Arab Technical Details

David Dexter’s FABRIC ATRIUM WALL is a work of art. When completed, the shape of the Burj al Arab and its purpose are well suited to each other, with the fabric limiting solar gain into the atrium and giving an excellent diffused light quality. It is also ideal for use in the Middle East, where its expected longevity and self-cleaning properties should allow it to withstand the harsh environment. On the right hand side of the wall, an expansion joint is supplied that spans the whole height of the structure and is completely sealed.

  1. The vertical support of the Burj al Arab’s trussed arches, which can stretch out from the supports by up to 13 metres, is provided by a series of 52mm diameter cross-braced macaloy bars on the 18th and 26th floors, respectively, of the building.
  2. A massive entry girder, which is attached to the lower basement construction, serves as an anchor point for the macaloy bars on level one of the building.
  3. The membrane is made up of two skins of PTFE coated fibreglass that are separated by an air gap of roughly 500mm and pre-tensioned over a series of trussed arches to provide structural integrity.
  4. The double-curved membrane panels that are created in this manner are capable of withstanding positive wind forces when spanning from truss to truss and negative wind pressures when spanning in the opposite direction.
  5. When it came to overcoming the challenging 3-dimensional design of the Burj al Arab structure, the answer consisted in the provision of a series of curved membrane panels that were installed in front of the hotel atrium wall while keeping the overall sail-like shape of the building.
  6. Pile length is 45 meters.
  7. The piles have a 1.5-meter diameter.

Heights The height of the Burj al Arab atrium is 182 meters.

The 27th Floor (Skyview) of the lodging, which is the highest point on the island, is 197.5 meters above sea level.

Design External Water Features: An Overview of the Water Features The outdoor fire and water elements are related with the arrival experience, which begins with the approach bridge and continues across to the constructed island location where the Burj Al Arab Hotel is located.

All of the fire towers are abstract architectural shapes that work together every half-hour to create a rhythmic pattern of tremendous rising spherical balls of blazing flame that rise to the surface of the water.

When the water is overflowing, it shines white in the sunshine and bounces down the stepped slope of the granite walls of the cave.

The MiniShooters® are arranged in a cluster in the center of the floor layout.

WeTFire® nozzles are located along the long axis of this elliptical structure, and they are directed at the hotel as well as the approach to the bridge.

At night, all of these intricately choreographed displays are internally lighted with white or colored lights, depending on the presentation. Images courtesy of Jumeirah

Design Overview of the Burj al Arab Internal Water Features

The Water Feature in the Atrium of the Burj al Arab This element is envisioned as a water sculpture that aesthetically engages the hotel’s guests. It is located in the lobby. The water feature, which is circular in shape and comprised of 24 No. white fibre optic illuminated water arches (Leap Frogs®) that encircle a gently sloped bowl of multi-colored broken glass aggregate, is located in the center of the atrium area. The HyperShooter® is a strong column of water that is encircled by 6 No. smaller “Minishooters® and serves as the focal point of this feature.

The laminar streams, which emerge from the bowl and round the sloping plane, form water arches with intertwined geometries as they rise from the bowl.

The HyperShooter® bursts from the shallow pool to a height of thirty metres on a regular basis, as part of the choreographic process.

With each shattered droplet, the column of water breaks up and is lighted by an array of white uplights around the outside of the space.

The Cascade Water Feature at the Burj al Arab This is a beautiful waterfall that descends from a total height of seven metres, divided into uneven height steps that increase in height as they descend the hill, resulting in a three-dimensional circular surface at the bottom.

escalators that connect the Burj al Arab Hotel’s Ground and First floors, is both aesthetically and kinetically striking.

Each level of the feature includes regulated waterfalls of water over diamond tiers of glass aggregate onto inclined grooved green/grey granite slabs, which provide a shimmering water skin that serves as a backdrop to the dynamic laminar stream presentations that take place on each level.

A dimmable coloured uplighting system adds even more emphasis to the “spark.” The operation of these elements is controlled by a computer, which allows an array of varied sequences and patterns to be choreographed on the display.

Several sections of the sequence sound like a chorus of hand clapped beats, which contributes to the atmosphere and interest produced in the huge Atrium Lobby.

Although the elements are visible from a great distance, such as from the top of the Burj al Arab’s Atrium, their color and light create a pleasing pattern and serve as a focal point for the whole area. Located in: Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Persian Gulf, the Middle East, Burj al Arab.
